A radio production studio, designed to complement WEAX programming, is nearly complete in the Ford Building. In addition to providing students an opportunity to gain valuable research, writing, producing and announcing experience, the facility will also serve as the home of Campus Connection, a new thirty minute public affairs program.
This student-driven show will promote happenings on and off campus. For example, students will interview Distinguished Speakers; discuss World Affairs Forum topics; review/preview Cinema Sampler series; discuss scholarship and giving opportunities; health programs; career fairs; interview representatives from local nonprofit organizations and members of the Angola community and even visit with alumni who can share fond memories of their time on campus.
“The aim of this interview program is to provide students with another career-focused experience … a venue for them to hone valuable communication skills. We also believe it will appeal to a diverse audience, enabling the community to learn more about what’s happening at Trine University … even discovering what type of interests professors have outside the classroom,” said Professor Mike McNamara, Communication Department Chairman.
When asked how he foresees the new production studio benefiting the Jannen School of Arts and Sciences, Dr. John Shannon, Dean, said, “It benefits our students by providing them with an excellent vehicle for experiential learning opportunities, which is exactly what we strive for at Trine University and in the Jannen School of Arts & Sciences.” Dr. Shannon went on to say, “The fact that [the students] will be able to promote campus activities and events while gaining valuable real world experiences makes this endeavor doubly satisfying.”
If Campus Connection is successful, another student production – this one a sports-oriented program - is already in the discussion stage.
COM students are genuinely excited about the proposed program; especially the opportunity to connect with people – on and off campus - and Campus Connection could be another way for them to make those connections.
