Professor Julie Howenstine

"If students can find something they enjoy and envision waking up every morning doing it as a job, they should grab hold of it and have fun learning about it here at Trine. If they wait until they are on the job to do this, they may not have a chance to change," Howenstine advises.

She speaks from experience. Her love of corporate marketing convinced her to bring real–life experiences into her classroom. "As I worked in corporate America, I developed many habits which I bring into the classroom: energy, organization, and a sense of humor, which you just have to have if you’re going to be in business today. I bring that experience along with newsworthy events into the classroom to entice students to think outside their textbooks."

For Howenstine, being a professor means much more than textbooks. "Caring about my students and their issues makes me a good professor, too," she says. "I enjoy teaching at Trine because of the dedication to the student´s future success. I like helping students find themselves and evolve into young adults. We are helping them develop the skills they will take with them into their careers. As I attempt to help them grow, they help me grow as well. I have never met a student I couldn´t learn something from!"

That energy and enthusiasm carry over into her everyday life. "I am an avid car buff and enjoy all aspects of them (including working on them)!" she said. Her desire to seize life and help her students do the same is captured in her favorite book—"Control Your Own Destiny or Someone Else Will."
