| April/May 2009 > Home | Trine engineers, educators excelTrine students continue to represent the university in stellar ways.A team of three Trine University civil engineering students placed second in an annual state–wide design competition March 26 in Carmel, Ind. The team of Adam Clark (Hillsdale, Mich.), Curt Daniels (Huntington, Ind.), and Kevin Hintz (Indianapolis, Ind.) presented their senior project, "Harcourt-Williams Street Roundabout Study in Angola, Ind." The competition is conducted each year at the annual meeting of the Indiana State Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Competitors included student teams from University of Evansville in Evansville, Rose–Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, and University of Notre Dame in South Bend, all in Indiana. A team from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. won the competition by a single point. The Trine project examined safe and efficient ways for vehicles and pedestrians to navigate the Harcourt and Williams street intersection in Angola. Trine University senior mathematics education major Louis Posa and Ben Detweiler, a senior social studies education major have earned recognition of excellence indications from Educational Testing Service for extremely high scores on Praxis II, a measure of general and subject–specific knowledge and teaching skills required of Indiana teacher candidates for licensure. Teachers seeking licensure must complete Praxis I and II tests, but Trine′s National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Educators (NCATE)–accredited Franks School of Education requires Trine students to pass Praxis I before they enter the program, Franks School of Education Dean Suzanne Van Wagner said. But they still must pass Praxis II, and the Trine scores clearly indicate remarkable students in an excellent program. "They only award the recognition of excellence designation to less than 1 percent of those who take the test worldwide," Van Wagner said. |
