A Black and White evening

Friends of Tri-State University can show their support for TSU students by attending the fifth annual Black and White Scholarship Gala on Feb. 16 in Ketner Sports Center beginning at 6 p.m. All proceeds will channel into the TSU Scholarship Fund to provide educational funding for deserving students.

TSU loses a friend

Tri-State University commemorated the life of assistant professor and the former TSU English and Communication Department chair Dr. Lisa Toner on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in Fabiani Theatre. Dr. Toner died Dec. 4 in New York on her 41st birthday after a battle with cancer.

Enrollment escalates

TSU’s fall student enrollment jumped by 33 percent over last year, according to an admission application report from the TSU Office of Admission.

Tri-State University will celebrate the unique human rights legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King during its 18th annual Dr. Martin Luther King and Black History Month Celebration Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. in the University Center’s Fabiani Theatre

The Office of Student Life and Bon Appetit will sponsor a Locks of Love event in Whitney Commons from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Those who wish can donate locks of hair 10 inches or longer for children suffering hair loss from physical ailments.

A President’s Day Engineering Open House will acquaint the community and prospective students with programs in TSU’s Allen School of Engineering & Technology.

Indiana native, international scholar, novelist, and attorney Robert Ely will elucidate on the subtleties and impact of language in the presentation “Language and a Nostalgia for World Culture” as part of TSU’s Distinguished Speaker series at 7 p.m. in Fabiani Theatre.

Cutoff date for students ages 9-14 to apply for participation in the 10 member LEGO Thunder FIRST LEGO League team at TSU. The TSU team will provide a unique opportunity for youths with a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to work with faculty and students in the schools of engineering and technology. Applications will be accepted through 5 p.m. in Fawick Hall 226.

The TSU Drama Club will stage “The Butler Did It,” the spring play, at 7 p.m. in Wells Theater. The play features plot twists and turns and a surprise ending.


  • TSU’s Franks School of Education ranks among the smallest schools in the nation to earn National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Only around 600 programs have earned the certification nationally.
  • TSU offers over $9 million annually in financial aid to students.
  • Of May 2007 main campus graduates for whom the Office of Career Services has data, 100 percent of students in 22 Tri-State University degree programs are either employed or in graduate school within six months of their graduation, according to Career Services’ May 2007 graduate destination survey.
  • TSU and its international students, staff, and supporters were pictured in a major newspaper in Saudi Arabia in December.

  • Board of Governors

    The Alumni Board of Governors members continue to contribute to their alma mater. At the fall meeting, the following members were unanimously approved to serve a three-year term: Scott Brown, CE 1980; Dr. Patrick Mills, ChE 1973; and Jerry Sturdivant, BS 1976.

  • Phoning friends a success

    The Annual Fund Phonathon generated pledges for 50 percent more dollars than in 2006.

    Here’s a breakdown:

    - Total number of pledges: 1,649
    - Total dollars pledged: $159,220
    - Total calls attempted: 24,397
    - Total calls completed 8,561

    The office of alumni and development will be conducting a spring phonathon in mid-March. The office extends heartfelt thanks to the students who volunteered their time to make sure others like themselves will continue to receive scholarship dollars. We also thank those who responded to those phone calls with generosity. You make the scholarships a reality.


  • Campaign Success

    The Vision for the Future capital campaign continues its phenomenal success, closing out the year at $76,606,335 toward the goal of $90,000 by December 2009. The campaign picked up over $5.6 million in the final month of 2007 alone, leaving $13, 393, 645 yet to be raised. We thank you for sharing our vision of TSU’s future. Your generous support continues to make exciting new challenges possible.

Athletics shine brightly

The TSU wrestling team has enjoyed great success this winter. Bryan Wight (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) and Louis Posa (Tecumseh, Mich./Clinton) captured the school’s first Little State Wrestling Tournament titles. Women’s basketball player Sarah Howe (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) was named the MIAA Player of the Week after the Thunder split a pair of games through the week of Nov. 19-15
