Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Trine University wishes you and your family peace, joy and happiness this season and in the coming year.

Visit Day Successful
This year’s Holiday Frenzy visit day in December topped last year’s participants by a big margin in spite of a snowfall of 2-3 inches, according to visit coordinator Tyler Benner. A total of 218 students, parents and guests visited the Trine campus to hear informative panels, tour campus, have lunch, and meet with personnel from a wide range of student services and athletics. A musician playing acoustic guitar and singing provided a new entertainment element for lunch in Whitney Commons.

Fall and Winter Sports Record-Setting
The Trine football team dominated the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association conference, notching a perfect 10-0 season and allowing Trine to host its own first-ever NCAA tournament game against Wheaton College on Nov. 22. Trine received national attention from ESPN, along with top-five regional and top-25 national rankings. Head Coach Matt Land was named regional Coach of the Year, and Angola Mayor Dick Hickman traveled to campus to proclaim Nov. 22 Trine University Thunder Football Day. Football mania reached fever pitch, as supporters packed the bleachers in the wind and cold to watch Trine’s historic NCAA début. Other winter sports have captured the momentum. Our men’s and women’s basketball teams are off to a strong start, and our wrestling team stands at 8-1, leading to our first national ranking for the sport. Go Thunder!

Student Wins Car Raffle
John Hill, a freshman management major and forward on the Thunder basketball team, won a 2009 Chevy Malibu in the Thunder Varsity Club raffle sponsored by the Office of Alumni & Development and Harold Chevrolet in Angola. The win was announced during halftime of the Thunder home basketball game Dec. 6. Hill called the win “really fun,” and said it gave him his first car.

ARC Progressing
The Athletic and Recreation Center (ARC) is beginning to take shape, as the structural steel is now complete. The expansion will connect with Hershey Hall and enhance our Ketner Sports Center, creating a large, impressive space which could see use for hosting national track and field events. Trine has produced national contenders in track and cross country, and this new space will provide a state-of-the-art facility in which they can train, protected from the weather. It will also provide practice areas for other sports, including volleyball and tennis, and a multi-purpose athletic facility for all students.

Mr. Widmann, a 1943 aeronautical engineering graduate, made an estate gift of $2.85 million to Trine upon his death at age 89. The new Kinney Street apartments have taken the name Widmann Apartments in honor of John’s support.

    Phonathon Dialed In
Our Annual Fund Phonathon continues to confirm the generosity of our donors. Total funds raised are $185,000, or $5,000 over last year, with matching gifts $16,000 over the amount raised last year. Three hundred twenty-four first-time donors joined the ranks of givers. That means you are helping more students attend Trine through your support of our scholarship program. Thank you!
