11/10 - Runners Wrap Up Season at Regionals

 

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. - The Trine University cross country teams closed out their season at the NCAA Division III Great Lake Regionals as the men placed 26th with 658 points while the women were 18th with 511 points.

 

Hosted by Anderson University at the Yule Golf Course, Calvin won the men’s team title with 36 points as William Jones of Franciscan (Ohio) won the individual title in a time of 24:26.16. The men’s race consisted of 256 runners from 38 teams throughout Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Kentucky. Senior Matt Burgess (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led Trine with a 75th place finish, completing the 8k course in a time of 26:40.17. In 91st was junior Michael Hammond (Columbia City, Ind./Bellmont), finishing the race in a time of 26:53.37. Senior Corbin Buckler (Marion, Ind./Eastbrook) finished his final race at Trine in 135th with a time of 27:32.98. Junior Ethan Fry (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) and freshman Cody Mart (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) rounded out the team scoring for the Thunder, finishing just a second apart. Fry finished 182nd with a time of 28:20.34 while Mart was 184th and came in with a time of 28:21.69.

 

On the women’s side, another conference opponent in Hope won the team title with 91 points. Alison Steinbrunner of Ohio Northern took the top individual honors, winning in a time of 21:00.31. The Thunder finished just four points ahead of conference rival Saint Mary’s as 234 racers competed for 36 teams. Freshman Ariel McCoy (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) led the Thunder for the first time this season, finishing in 57th place with a time of 23:31.16. Fellow freshman Gabbie Bates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) finished the 6k course in a time of 24:20.24 to place 97th. Just seconds behind was senior Annalisa Krug (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) placing 105th in her final collegiate race with a time of 24:28.00. Sophomore Kelly Scholer (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) came across the finish line in a time of 24:33.11 to place 110th. Freshman Courtney Forsythe (West Mansfield, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) rounded out the team scoring for the Thunder with a 159th place finish, wrapping up the season in a time of 25:41.25.

 

The 18th place finish for the women’s team is highest they’ve finished at a regional meet since becoming an NCAA member school.

 

10/27 - XC Places 6th and 7th at MIAA Championships

 

CONCORD, Mich. - At the MIAA Cross Country Championships hosted by Albion College at the Whiffletree Hill Golf Course, the Trine University men’s cross country team finished sixth while the women’s squad placed seventh.

On the men’s side, the Thunder finished with 172 points as Calvin took the conference championship with 20 points.

Leading the way on the men’s team was senior Matt Burgess (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) who placed 18th in a time of 25 minutes and 57 seconds. Exactly one minute behind was fellow senior Corbin Buckler (Marion, Ind./Eastbrook) in 33rd placed. Just behind in 35th was junior Michael Hammond (Columbia City, Ind./Bellmont) who finished the 8k course in 27:18. In 40th place was freshman Cody Mart (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) who completed the course in a time of 27:33. Rounding out the scoring for the Thunder in 46th place was junior Ethan Fry (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) with a time of 28:05.

The Trine women finished with 181 points, just 16 points back of sixth place Saint Mary’s. The Calvin women also took home the top spot with 26 points. Freshman Gabbie Bates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) led the way for the Thunder in 23rd place in a time of 23:44. Just behind in 26th place was fellow freshman Ariel McCoy (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) who completed the 6k course in a time of 23:54. Finishing the race in a time of 24:13 was senior Annalisa Krug (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) who came in 34th. Sophomore Kelly Scholer (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) came in 48th, completing the race in a time of 25:06. Senior Abigail Samuels (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Central) rounded out the team scoring for Trine with a  50th place finish with a time of 25:42.

Trine will return to the course for the NCAA Regional Championships hosted by Anderson (IN) on November 10 beginning at 11:00 a.m.

 

10/13 - XC Places 21st at Inter-Regional Rumble

 

OBERLIN, Ohio - The Trine University cross country teams compete at the Inter-Regional Rumble hosted by Oberlin College where both the men’s and women’s teams finished 21st.

On the men’s side, 32 teams and 275 racers competed in the 8k race that saw Geneseo St. take home the men’s title with 55 points. The Thunder finished the day with 546 points as senior Matt Burgess (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led the Thunder in 38th place with a time of 25:16. Finishing in 66th place was junior Michael Hammond (Columbia City, Ind./Bellmont) in a time of 25:38.8. Senior Corbin Buckler (Marion, Ind./Eastbrook) finished the course in a time of 26:25.3 to place 121st. Freshman Colin Thompson (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) placed 200th overall, with a time of 27:32.9. Rounding out the team scoring for Trine was junior Lincoln Frey (Pettisville, Ohio/Pettisville) who finished the race in 205th place in a time of 27:40.8.

On the women’s side, host Oberlin won the team title with 65 points as the Thunder finished with 578 points. Leading the way for Trine was freshman Gabbie Bates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) who placed 54th with a time of 22:50.7. In 104th was fellow freshman Ariel McCoy (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) who completed the 6k course in a time of 23:30.8. Senior Annalisa Krug (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) came across the finish line in a time of 24:10.7 to place 142nd. Finishing in 180th place was freshman Courtney Forsythe (West Mansfield, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) who finished the race in a time of 24:52.5. Senior Sannie Anderson (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) rounded out the scoring for the Thunder with a time of 25:03.4 to finish in 191st place.

Trine will take next weekend off before returning to action on October 27 at the MIAA conference Championships hosted by Albion College beginning at 11:00 a.m.

 

9/29 - Thunder XC Competes in Chicago

 

CHICAGO - The Trine University men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the 40th Annual Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational at Montrose Beach in Chicago hosted by Loyola University where the men’s team placed 26th and the women were 33rd. The field featured several NCAA Division I teams and also included universities from Canada.

The University of Wisconsin won the men’s meet that featured 47 teams and 456 runners. The Thunder finished the meet with 832 points and were fourth among NCAA Division III schools. Senior Matt Burgess (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led the men’s team with a time of 26:45 to finish 100th. Junior Michael Hammond (Columbia City, Ind./Bellmont) completed the course in a time of 27:24 to place 168th. Senior Corbin Buckler (Marion, Ind./Eastbrook) placed 196th with a time of 27:41. Freshman Cody Mart (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) came in 299th with a time of 29:18. Rounding out the top five for the Thunder was senior Nate Konzen (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo Christian) in 315th place in a time of 29:36.

On the women’s side, McMaster University from Canada took first out of 51 teams and 514 runners. The Trine women were also fourth amongst Division III schools with 1,012 points. Freshman Gabbie Bates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) led Trine with a 147th place finish with a time of 19:26. In 257th was fellow freshman Ariel McCoy (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) with a time of 20:33. Senior Annalisa Krug (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) placed 294th, to finish in a time of 20:57. Freshman Courtney Forsythe (West Mansfield, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) completed the course in a time of 21:22 to place 326th. Finishing out the team scoring for Trine was senior Sannie Anderson (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) in 341st with a time of 21:31.

The Thunder will next compete at the Inter-Regional Rumble hosted by Oberlin College on October 13 beginning at 11:00 a.m.

 

9/21 - Runners Open Conference Season

 

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Trine University cross country teams started their conference season with the men’s squad finishing sixth and the women seventh at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Saint Mary’s College.

Calvin won both the men’s and women’s team titles.

On the men’s side, the Thunder finished just eight points back of fifth place Alma. Senior Matt Burgess (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led Trine with a 20th place finish, completing the course in a time of 26:54. Junior Michael Hammond (Columbia City, Ind./Bellmont) was just three placed back, finishing in a time of 27:02. Just behind in 29th place was senior Corbin Buckler (Marion, Ind./Eastbrook) who finishing the race with a time of 27:28. Finishing in a time of 27:42 to place 31st was sophomore Sam Gray (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger). Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder was freshman Cody Mart (Channahon, Ill./Minooka Community) who finished the race in a time of 28:42 to place 42nd.

For the women, freshman Gabbie Bates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) led the Thunder with a 22nd place finish, with a time of 23:39. Bates was third overall among all freshmen women in the meet. In 27th place was senior Annalisa Krug (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) who finished her afternoon in a time of 24:26. Freshman Ariel McCoy (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) completed the course in a time of 24:46 to finish in 34th place. With times of 25:55 and 26:08, sophomore Kelly Scholer (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) and senior Sannie Anderson (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) rounded out the team scoring for the Thunder finishing in 48th and 49th places respectively.

Trine will next compete on September 29 at the 40th Annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Cross Country Invitational hosted by Loyola University in Chicago beginning at 11:45 a.m.

 

9/14 - Runners Compete Against Top Programs in Indiana

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Trine University cross country teams faced the toughest competition they will see all season as they competed in the annual Indiana Intercollegiate races hosted by Indiana State University. The Thunder men finished 18th overall with 508 points while the women were also 18th with 533 points.

The University of Indiana won both the men’s and women’s races with 49 and 29 points respectively. The field was open to open to all Indiana colleges and universities and featured six combined nationally ranked teams throughout NCAA Divisions I, II, III and NAIA.

The men’s field saw 220 racers compete in the 8K race for 27 teams. The Thunder finished 11th amongst the Non-Division I teams, and sixth among the other Division III schools. The squad finished one spot ahead of Division I IPFW. Leading the way for the Thunder was seniors Matt Burgess (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) and Corbin Buckler (Marion, Ind./Eastbrook). Burgess finished in 61st place with a time of 26:52 while Buckler was 71st, finishing the course in a time of 27:16. Finishing in 95th was junior Michael Hammond (Columbia City, Ind./Bellmont) in a time of 27:46. Sophomore Sam Gray (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) completed the course in a time of 28:57 to finish 137th. Rounding out the men’s scoring for the Thunder was freshman Jesus Castillo (Goshen, Ind./Goshen) in a time of 29:23 to place 144th.

On the women’s side, the race consisted of 26 teams and 214 racers. Trine finished two points ahead of local rival Indiana Tech and was fifth among Division III schools. Senior Annalisa Krug (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) led the Thunder in 77th place with a time of 20:15. Freshman Gabbie Bates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) completed the 5K course in a time of 20:22 to finish in 85th. Fellow freshman Ariel McCoy (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) placed 109th, finishing in a time of 21:02. Senior Sannie Anderson (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) finished 120th in the field as she completed the race in a time of 21:18. Another freshman in Courtney Forsythe (West Mansfield, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) rounded out the Thunder scoring in 142nd place with a time of 22:09.

Trine will next compete in the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Saint Mary’s College on September 21, with races beginning at 5:00 p.m.

 

9/8 - Thunder Compete at Knight Invite

GRAN RAPIDS, Mich. - The Trine University cross country teams turned in solid performances at the Calvin Knights Invitational as both teams finished in 16th place. Host Calvin took home both the men’s and women’s titles.

 

On the men’s side, the Thunder finished with 403 points, just three points back of Wittenberg. Leading the way for Trine was senior Matt Burgess (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) in 52nd place out of 333 finishers  with a time of 26:20. Less than a minute back in 110th was sophomore Sam Gray (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) finishing with a time of 27:08. Right behind him in 113th was senior Corbin Buckler (Marion, Ind./Eastbrook) with a time of 27:12. Finishing in 145th was junior Michael Hammond (Columbia City, Ind./Bellmont) completing the race in a time of 27:30. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder was freshman Michael Greenwell (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) in 207th place to finish in a time of 28:37.

The women’s team finished with 445 point as freshman Gabbie Bates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) led the Thunder with a 47th place finish out of 313 racers, completing the course in a time of 19:10. Senior Annalisa Krug (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) also finished under the 20 minute mark with a time of 19:58 to place 97th. In 134th place was freshman Ariel McCoy (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) finishing in a time of 20:27. Senior Sannie Anderson (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) placed 161st while completing the race in a time of 20:49. Just behind Anderson in 167th was sophomore Kelly Scholer (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) to round out the team scoring with a time of 20:53.

The Thunder will next compete in the Indiana Intercollegiate Invitational taking place at Indiana University on September 14 beginning at 3:30 p.m.

 

8/31 - Runners Dominate Dual Meet

 

OLIVET, Mich. - It was a ‘perfect’ night for the Trine University men’s and women’s cross country teams as they swept their dual meet with Olivet College as both teams scored a perfect 15 points, taking the top five spots in both races.

Senior Matt Burgess (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) led the Thunder men to victory as he finished the 5K course in 17:06. Fellow senior Corbin Buckler (Marion, Ind./Eastbrook) finished 30 seconds back in second place in a time of 17:40. Trine placed the next three runners well ahead of the closest Comet runner as freshman Michael Greenwell (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) placed third with a time of 17:55, sophomore Sam Gray (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) finished fourth with a time of 18:01 and another sophomore in Brandon Long (Markle, Ind./Norwell) rounded out the top five completing the course in 18:20. The men’s squad would go on to take 11 of the top 15 spots in the race.

On the women’s side, Trine took home the top seven places and eight of the top 10 spots. Freshman Gabbie Bates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia) led the way for the Thunder finishing a full minute ahead of anyone else on the course in a time of 19:57. Senior Annalisa Krug (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) finished second, completing the race in a time of 21:02. Finishing in third was freshman Ariel McCoy (Garrett, Ind./Garrett) with a time of 21:14. In fourth was sophomore Kelly Scholer (Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) and rounding out the top five was freshman Courtney Forsythe (West Mansfield, Ohio/Benjamin Logan) finishing in times of 21:32 and 22:10 respectively.

Trine will next compete at the Knight Invitational hosted by Calvin College on September 8 beginning at 10:00 a.m.
