4/27 - Golfers Third in MIAA Spring AQ Tournament

 

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Trine University men’s golf team fell just shy of qualifying for the national tournament as they finished third in the three-round spring qualifying tournament after finishing the final two rounds over the weekend, winning on Friday and then placing fourth on Saturday.

On Friday, the Thunder took the top spot in the second round with a team score of 323 to pull within nine strokes of Calvin heading into the final day. In the final round, Trine finished fourth with a team score of 324 for a three-round total of 965. Calvin won the MIAA AQ with a score of 956 with Adrian second with a 961.

Played at the par-72, 6,739 yard Watermark Country Club, junior Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) took medalist honors on Friday with a round of 78 and finished Saturday with a score of 81 to tie for 12th. Senior Brett Powers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) shot rounds of 81-82, placing tied for third and then 13th. Senior Pat Wolcott (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) finished ninth in round two with a score of 83 while finishing tied for 15th in the third round with an 84. Freshman Bryce Moore (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) knocked nine strokes off his Friday score after tying for 17th with an 86 to finish the weekend in a tie for second with a 77. Junior Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) tied for third in round number two shooting an 81 for the day.

 

4/27 - Golfers Fourth at Own Gettig Invite

 

ANGOLA, Ind. - On a sunny, warm spring day, the Trine University men’s golf team tied for fourth at their own Bill Gettig Invitational. In their last invitational of the year, the Thunder tallied a team score of 307.

Played at Trine’s own par-71, 6,384 yard Zollner Golf Course, the Thunder finished tied for fourth with Calumet College. Trine finished just one stroke behind Olivet College and just six strokes behind second place Alma College as Owens Community College won with a team score of 290.  Luke Berger of Owens and Tyler Nicol from Calumet tied for medalist honors with an even-par 70. Altogether, 10 different schools competed in the invitational.

Trine’s top team was led by freshman Corey Bremigan (Russia, Ohio/Russia) finishing tied for 13th, hitting a round 75. Fellow freshman Connor Dwyer (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) and Miles Adams (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) tied for 20th carding rounds of 77. Another freshman in Cody Knapp (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center) and sophomore Brandon Snell (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) rounded out the scoring tying for 27th while carding a 78 respectively.

 

4/13 - Golfers 4th After First Round of MIAA AQ

WEST OLIVE, Mich. -  It was a tough start to the three-round MIAA Automatic Qualifier Tournament for the Trine University men’s golf team as they finished fourth with a team score of 318. The Thunder have some ground to make up in the final two rounds as Calvin took home the top spot with a 304, followed by Hope with a 311 and Adrian with a 313.

Only the top four teams from the MIAA’s fall season standings are competing in the spring tournament. The team that finishes with the top cumulative 54-hole score at the conclusion of the three MIAA spring tournaments will receive the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.

Played that the par-71 Wuskowhan Players Club, Calvin’s Dave Sarkipato took medalist honors with a 1-under-par 70.

Leading the way for Trine in a tie for third was junior Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) with a round of 5-over-par 76. In a tie for seventh was fellow junior Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) firing a round of 78. Senior Brett Powers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) finished tied for 13th carding a round of 80. Sophomore Brandon Snell (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) and freshman Bryce Moore (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) rounded out the scoring for the Thunder placing 18th and 19th with rounds of 84 and 85 respectively.

Trine will next play in the Calvin Invitational on April 16 beginning at 1:00 p.m.

 

4/10 - Wolcott Leads Thunder to Win of A.C. Eddy Invite

 

ANGOLA, Ind. - After a short lightening delay and a downpour through the final few holes, the Trine University men’s golf team persevered through it all to take home the top spot at their own A.C. Eddy Invitational with a team score of 290. Despite the tough weather conditions over the final few holes, the tournament average was just nine strokes over par for the day.

Played at Trine’s own par-71, 6,384 yard Zollner Golf Course, the Thunder finished 10 strokes ahead of Huntington University, and eight shots ahead of the Trine “B” team. In all, seven different schools competed in the invitational.

First Team All-MIAA senior Pat Wolcott (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) took home medalist honors firing a 1-under-par 70. Wolcott finished the afternoon with four birdies and 11 pars. One shot behind in a tie for second was junior Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) with an even-par-71. In a tie for fifth with a 2-over-par 73 was junior Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa). Sophomore Brandon Snell (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) finished tied for 11th with a round of 76. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder in a tie for 20th was freshman Bryce Moore (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) carding a 77 for the day.

Trine will return to the course on April 13 for the first round of the four-team MIAA Automatic Qualifier Tournament hosted by Hope beginning at 1:00 p.m.

 

10/10 - Wolcott, Eli and Bennett Named All-MIAA

ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named its 2012 All-MIAA Golf Team as the Thunder received three honorees, senior Pat Wolcott (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) was named to the first team while juniors Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) and Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) were named to the second team. The Thunder had the most players named All-MIAA among all conference schools.

Wolcott finished third overall in the conference leaderboard with a total score of 602 for an average of 75.2, just eight strokes behind the top player. Wolcott won the first jamboree of the season at Kalamazoo while also finishing second at the third jamboree at Olivet. Wolcott becomes the first Trine player since Terence Clingaman in 2010 to be named All-MIAA First Team and 10th overall for Trine.

 

 

Nolan EliEli finished the fall season ninth in the conference with a total stroke count of 616 for an average of 77.0, including tying for a conference season-low 69 at the fifth jamboree of the season on Trine’s home course.

 

 

 

 

Graham BennettJust two strokes behind was Bennett who finished tied for 10th in the conference with a 77.2 stroke average for the eight jamborees with a total stroke count of 618.

 

 

 

 

This marks the fourth time in school history that at least three Trine golfers have been named All-MIAA, the others came in 2004-2006. Trine has had an All-MIAA player each season since joining the MIAA in 2004.

The Thunder finished fourth for the MIAA Championship and qualified for the three-round spring automatic qualifier tournament.

 

 

10/9 - Golfers Sixth at Jamboree, Qualify for Spring Tourny

 

MARSHALL, Mich. - It was a tough end to the season for the Trine University men’s golf team as they finished sixth at the final MIAA Jamboree with a team score of 334. The Thunder finished the fall Jamboree season with a total score of 2,475 to qualify fourth for the four-team, three-round spring MIAA tournament which will determine the conference Automatic Qualifier for the NCAA Tournament.

Played at the par-72 The Medalist Golf Club, the 6,955 yard event was won by Adrian College with a score of 312 as they also had two players tie for medalist honors with a score of 76 in Brandon Skytta and Cameron McKee.

Leading the Thunder in a tie for seventh was senior Pat Wolcott (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and junior Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) with scores of 79. In a tie for 25th was fellow junior Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) who finished the afternoon with an 84. Rounding out the scoring for the Thunder was freshman Cody Knapp (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center), carding a 92 for the round to finish in a tie for 39th.

Calvin won the MIAA Championship with an eight-round score of 2,446 while Hope and Adrian finished second and third respectively to also qualify for the four-team spring tournament.

 

10/1 - Thunder Golf Second at Jamboree #7

 

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Trine University men’s golf team finished second at the MIAA Jamboree #7 hosted by Calvin College as the Thunder carded a team score of 310.

Played at the par-72, 6,739 yard Watermark Country Club, Hope took the team and individual medalist honors with a total score of 299 while Collin Breit carded a 72. Trine gained a stroke on overall leader Calvin who finished third with a 311, but fell into third behind Hope as the Thunder trail the Knights by 19 strokes with one event to play.

 

For the third straight event junior Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) led the Thunder, tying for fifth with a score of 75. In a tie for 13th was senior Pat Wolcott (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and junior Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) carding rounds of 78 for the afternoon. Junior Nick Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) finishing his round with a 79 to finish in a tie for 20th. Freshman Miles Adams (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) rounded out the scoring for the Thunder finishing with an 80 to tie for 24th place.

Playing as an individual was freshman Connor Dwyer (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) who tied for 44th with a score of 89.

The fall season will wrap-up with the final MIAA Jamboree at Albion on October 9 at 1:00 p.m.

 

9/29 - Thunder Fifth at MIAA Jamboree #6

 

ALMA, Mich. - The Trine University men’s golf team finished fifth at MIAA Jamboree number six with a team score of 308. The Thunder remain in second place overall in the conference and now trail leader Calvin by 20 strokes.

Played at the par-72, Pine River Country Club, Calvin took the team win with a score of 301. Alma’s Greg Silverthorn took home the individual medalist honors with a 3-under-par 69.

Leading the way for the Thunder in a tie for sixth was junior Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) with a round of 2-over-par 74. Fellow junior Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) finished in a tie for 12th with a round of 76. Senior Pat Wolcott (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) carded a 77 to finish tied for 17th. In a tie for 32nd was freshman Miles Adams (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) carding an 84 for the afternoon. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder was junior Nick Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble), shooting an 84 for the day to finish tied for 38th.

Playing as an individual was freshman Connor Dwyer (Coldwater,  Mich./Coldwater) who finished tied for 34th with a score of 82 on the day.

Trine will take a day off before returning to the course on October 1 for the seventh Jamboree of the season hosted by Calvin.

 

9/27 - Men’s Golf Sweeps Jamboree

 

ANGOLA, Ind. - Using the home course to their advantage, the Trine University men’s golf team won the fifth MIAA Jamboree of the season with a team score of 288. The Thunder finished two strokes ahead of Hope as Trine was able to cut into Calvin’s overall lead for the season, as the Thunder trail by just 13 strokes with three events remaining.

Trine junior Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) led the Thunder squad to victory as he took home medalist honors with a round of 2-under-par 69. Finishing in a tie for seventh was senior Pat Wolcott (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) with a round of 1-over-par 72. In a tie for 10th was junior Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) who finished his round with a 73. One shot back from there was freshman Miles Adams (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) who finish in a tie for 12th. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder in a tie for 23rd was freshman Conner Dwyer (Coldwater,  Mich./Coldwater), shooting a round of 76.

Leading the way for Trine’s individual players was junior Nick Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) who tied for third with an even-par 71.

Trine won’t have time to rest as they host the Ken Venturi Invitational, a match play event, on September 28 at 1:00 p.m. and then travel to Alma on September 29 for the next MIAA Jamboree which begins at 1:00 p.m.

 

9/24 - Thunder Sixth at Hope Jamboree

 

WEST OLIVE, Mich. - It was a tough day for the Trine University men’s golf team as they finished sixth as the fourth MIAA Jamboree of the season with a team score of 324.

Hosted by Hope College and played at the par-71 Wuskowhan Players Club, Calvin had the top team score with a 304 as well as the medalist in Dave Sarkipato with a 2-over-par 73. Just nine strokes separated second through sixth places as the Thunder now trail Calvin in the standings by 22 strokes in the standings.

Senior Pat Wolcott (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) led the Thunder with a 76 to finish in a tie for fourth. Junior Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) carded an 80 to finish in a tie for 14th. In a tie for 23rd was fellow junior Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) with a round of 83. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder were sophomore Brandon Snell (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) and freshman Bryce Moore (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) in a tie for 28th with rounds of 85 respectively.

Trine will host a makeup of the MIAA Jamboree that was rained out over the weekend at Zollner Golf Course on September 27 with play set to begin at 1:00 p.m.

 

9/19 - Trine Golfer’s Second at Jamboree #3

 

OLIVET, Mich. - After a second place finish with a score of 307 at the third MIAA Jamboree of the season, the Trine University men’s golf team drops two stroke behind current leader Calvin College.

Hosted by Olivet College and played at the 6,980 yard, par-71 Bedford Valley Country Club, Calvin took the top honors with a team score of 305. Calvin also had the individual medalist in Ben Kuiper who finished with an even-par 71.

Leading the way for the Thunder in a tie for second was senior Pat Wolcott (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing), firing a 1-over-par 72. Tying for sixth was junior Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa), shooting a 5-over-par 76. Junior Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) finished the afternoon with a round of 79 to finish in a tied for 16th. In a tie for 20th was freshman Bryce Moore (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) with a round 80. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder was junior Nick Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) placing 38th with a score of 89 on the day.

Trine will host the next MIAA Jamboree on September 22 beginning at 1:00 p.m.

 

9/15 - Thunder Golfers Second at Adrian Jamboree

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Trine University men’s golf team finished second at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian College with a team score of 302. After two Jamborees on the season, the Thunder and Calvin are tied in the conference standings.

Played at the par-71, 6,284 yard Lenawee Country Club, Calvin took the team honors with a team total of 295.

Junior Nick Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) led the Thunder as a co-medalist with two other golfers with a round of 1-over-par 72. Senior Pat Wolcott (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and junior Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) tied for 13th, shooting rounds of 76. Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa), a junior, finished two shots back from there in 24th with a 78 for the afternoon. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder was freshman Connor Dwyer (Coldwater,  Mich./Coldwater) who finished the day in a tie for 27th with a score of 80.

The Thunder will return to action on September 19 when they participate in another Jamboree hosted by Olivet beginning at 1:00 p.m.

 

9/11 - Thunder Golfers Sweep Speiss Memorial Tournament

 

WAUSEON, Ohio - The Trine University men’s and women’s golf teams swept the Jon P. Speiss Memorial Collegiate Golf Tournament hosted by Defiance College. Trine freshman Amy Worthington (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) took home medalist honors for the second straight tournament.

Played at the Ironwood Golf Club, the par-72 course was played at 6,695 yards for the men and 5,885 yards for the women.

The men’s team won with a score of 306, besting Ohio Northern by two strokes. The Thunder were led by Freshman Bryce Moore (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) in second place with a round of 2-over-par 74, three strokes behind the medalist. Fellow freshman Connor Dwyer (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) was just one shot behind in a tie for third with a round of 75. Shooting a round of 78 to place tied for 11th was junior Nick Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble). Rounding out the men’s scoring in a tie for 14th with rounds of 79 were freshmen Miles Adams (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) and Cody Knapp (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center).

For the women, the Thunder took home the title with a team score of 343, 17 strokes better than second place Lourdes University. Worthington led the Thunder with a 4-over-par 76 to win by four shots and has now won each of her first two collegiate tournaments. Sitting alone in fifth was freshman Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) with a round of 86. Just one shot back from there in sixth was junior Jennifer Sir Louis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead). Sophomore Erika Milam (Roan, Ind./Manchester) finished in a tie for 13th with a round of 94. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder in a tie for 15th was freshman Amanda McPherron (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) carding a 95 for the round.

Both teams will next compete on September 15 with the men’s squad traveling to Adrian for the second MIAA Jamboree of the season, while the ladies will participate in the Manchester Fall Invitational.

 

9/8 - Wolcott Leads Thunder to Tie at MIAA Jamboree

 

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Trine University men’s golf team played an outstanding round of golf to tie for the win at the first MIAA Jamboree of the season with a team score of 302 behind senior Pat Wolcott (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) who took home the medalist honors.

The first Jamboree of the season was host by Kalamazoo at thepar-72, 6,630 yard Milham Park Golf Course.

The Thunder tied with Hope College with a combined score of 14-over-par 302. Pat Wolcott took top honors with an even-par 72, carded 12 pars, three birdies and three bogies on the afternoon. Finishing four shots behind in a tie for 13th was junior Nick Ihrie with a round of 76. The junior duo of Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) and Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) finished in a tie for 18th with rounds of 77. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder was freshman Bryce Moore (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) with an 86.

Playing as an individual and tying for 10th was freshman Connor Dwyer (Coldwater,  Mich./Coldwater) with a round of 3-over-par 75.

The Thunder will next compete at the Speiss Invitational hosted by Defiance College on September 11 beginning at 10:00 a.m.

 

9/1 - Golfers Eighth at First Tournament

 

OLIVET, Mich. - The Trine University men’s golf team wrapped up the two-day Lou Collins Memorial Tournament with an eighth place finish, shooting a team total 58-over-par, 321-305-626.

Held at Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek, Michigan, the par-71 course was played at 6,980 yards. Indiana Wesleyan took home the team title in the 15 team field with a two-day score of 298-284-582. Tyler Keith of Indiana Wesleyan also took the medalist honors with rounds of 71-70-141.

Trine finished four strokes out of seventh behind conference foe Hope College. Leading the way for the Thunder was freshman Bryce Moore (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) in a tie for 28th with rounds of 81-74-155. Junior Nolan Eli (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) and senior Pat Wolcott (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) finished in a tie for 31st with rounds of 79-77-156 and 81-75-156 respectively. Finishing in a tie for 45th was junior Graham Bennett (Charlotte, N.C./Mallard Creek) with a two-day score of 80-79-159. Rounding out the team scoring for Trine was sophomore Brandon Snell (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) who finished tied for 52nd with a two-round total of 81-79-160.

Trine will begin conference play at the first MIAA Jamboree of the season when they travel to Kalamazoo on September 8, with tee times set for 1:00 p.m.
