3/3- thunder fall to ohio northern, cedarville
ORLANDO, FLA.-- The Trine men's tennis team dropped matches to Ohio Northern and NCAA Division II-foe Cedarville Tuesday. The Thunder fell to Ohio Northern 7-2 in their morning match, before being narrowly defeated by Cedarville 5-4 in the evening.
Ohio Northern 7, Trine 2
Caleb Knust (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) and Nick Ihrie (Kendalville, Ind./East Noble) continued their solid play in singles for the Thunder. Knust won his third-consecutive match of the spring at no. 1 singles. He defeated Josh Saunders 6-3, 6-1. Ihrie improved to 3-1 in singles matches this season with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over J.T. Rapaport. The loss drops Trine to 4-3 on the season. Ohio Northern improves to 3-1 with the victory.
ONU swept doubles play and picked up four wins in singles play. Do Thai and Blake Troller combined to win their no. 2 doubles match and added wins in singles play.
Cedarville 5, Trine 4
After dropping all three doubles matches, the Thunder rallied back with solid singles play to give the Yellow Jackets a scare. Caleb Knust (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) continues to be a force in the no. 1 singles court as he picked up his fourth-consecutive victory, 6-1, 6-1. Joe Dunbar (Indianapolis, Ind./Guerin Catholic) was victorious in no. 2 single by a 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 score. Joey Clarke added a win in the no. 3 court by a pair of 6-3 scores. Nick Ihrie (Kendalville, Ind./East Noble) rounded out Trine's winners with a 6-1, 6-4 victory in the no. 6 court.
Adam Levesque and Jared Gerber picked up singles wins for Cedarville. Gerber won what turned out to be the deciding match point in a tiebreaker.
The loss drops Trine to 4-4 overall. Cedarville improves to 4-2 on the season. The Thunder return to action tomorrow when they take on Grand Valley State at 12:30 p.m.

ORLANDO, FLA.-- The Trine men's tennis team fell to Clark University by a score of 6-3 Sunday afternoon.
Trine got wins at no. 1 singles from Caleb Knust (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) and no. 5 singles from Spenser Gilbert (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial). Both players turned in dominating performances in winning in straight sets. Knust won 6-2, 6-2, while Gilbert won 6-2, 6-1. Knust is now 7-2 on the season. Trine also got a win at no. 3 doubles from Joey Clark (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) and Nick Ihrie (Kendalville, Ind./East Noble) who won by a score of 8-3.
The loss drops Trine to 4-2 overall on the season. Clark University improves to 4-1.
The Thunder return to action in Orlando tomorrow. They will face Ohio Northern at 10:30 a.m. and NCAA Division II member Cedarville at 5:30 p.m.
2/27- thunder open spring season with win
ANGOLA, IND.-- Trine's men's tennis team defeated St. Francis 8-1 in a non-conference match held indoors at Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic Recreation Center Thursday evening.
The Thunder swept singles matches and took home wins in the top two doubles courts to earn the victory. Caleb Knust (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) and Joe Dunbar (Indianapolis, Ind./Guerin Catholic) combined for an 8-5 over Nathan Barger and Tate Dishman in the no. 1 doubles court. Knust got the better of Barger in singles play, 6-1, 6-1, and Dunbar added a victory over Matt Stallman, 6-1, 6-2.
Spenser Gilbert (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) and Joey Clark (Sturgis, Mich./Sturgis) picked up an 8-3 win over Stallman in JT Biggs in no. 2 doubles action. Clark defeated Dishman 6-4, 6-1, while Gilbert defeated Michael Thompson 6-0, 6-1.
The Thunder will travel to Florida for their upcoming spring break matches. They open their trip with a 3:00 p.m. match against Clark this Sunday, Mar. 2.
9/18 - Tennis Teams Split Fall Dual Finale
GOSHEN, Ind. - In their final dual matches of the fall season, the Trine University tennis teams split with Goshen College as the women’s team won 6-3 while the men’s team fell 7-2. The men finish the fall with a 3-1 record while the women finish 3-2.
For the men, sophomore Nick Cassidy (Archbold, Ohio/Perrysburg) won the lone singles match for the Thunder as he defeated Krishnan Ganesan in the No. 5 pairings 6-0, 5-7, 10-8. Cassidy teamed with senior Nick Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) to take the third doubles match 9-7. Also in doubles action the team of sophomore Caleb Knust (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) and senior Joe Dunbar (Indianapolis, Ind./Guerin Catholic) fell just shy of a victory 9-7 at the No. 1 position.
The women’s team swept the doubles matches in convincing fashion. In the No. 1 spot, senior Jessica Huhnke (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) and freshman Bailey Denton (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) took the match 8-2. At second doubles, seniors Chrissy Uphaus (Richmond, Ind./Centreville) and Lauren Schlueter (Akron, Ohio/Revere) won 8-3 while junior Erin Kwaske (Jackson, Mich./Western) and sophomore Lexi Mack (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) took the third position 8-4.
In singles action, Denton earned a point in the No. 3 match winning 6-1, 6-1. Schlueter took the No. 4 match 6-2, 6-1 while Mack needed a third set to win the fifth position 3-6, 6-4, 10-3. Ali Marley (New Carlisle, Ind./New Prairie) fell in a tough 3-set match at the sixth position 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.
The women’s team will now compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championship hosted by DePauw University beginning on Sept. 20.
For the men, they will also compete in the ITA Regional Championship which will be hosted by Kalamazoo College starting Sept. 27.
