4/21 - Worthington, Thunder Close Out Season with Victory

 

FRANKLIN, Ind. - Led by standout freshman Amy Worthington (Logansport, Ind./Logansport), the Trine University women’s golf team closed out their season with a victory as they came from a stroke down to win the two-day five-team Franklin Lady Grizzly Spring Invitational with a team score of 347-331-678. It was the second straight win for the Thunder as they took home the title by 16 strokes over second place Franklin

 

Played at the par-72, 5,810 yard Hillview Country Club, Worthington took home medalist honors for the fourth time this season with a two-day score of 75-77-152. Worthington won by 10 shots over second place Avery Brown from Franklin.

 

Freshman Amanda McPherron (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) finished the weekend in fifth place with scores of 89-84-173. Fellow freshman Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) was just a stroke behind in a tie for sixth place with a scores of 89-85-174. A fourth freshman in Mikala Freeland (Danville, Ind./Danville Community) fired rounds of 96-85-181 to finish in 10th place. Rounding out team scoring for the Thunder was senior Lauren Burns (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf) placed 12th, carding scores of 94-89-183 for the weekend.

 

4/13 - Golfers Take Care of Business at Manchester

 

WABASH, Ind. - Despite the wintery weather conditions, the Trine University women’s golf team played like it was summer as they easily took home first at the Manchester University Spring Invitational with a team score of 380. The Thunder were 34 shots ahead of second place and host Manchester.

Played at the par-72, 5,965 yard Honeywell Golf Course, Trine took home four of the top five individual spots.

Freshman Amy Worthington (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) finished nine shots ahead of the field firing a round of 88 en route to claiming medalist honors and her third win of the year. Sitting in a tie for second was a pair of freshmen in Mikala Freeland (Danville, Ind./Danville Community) and Amanda McPherron (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) with rounds of 97 respectively. Standing alone in fourth was another freshman in Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) shooting a 98 on the afternoon. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder was senior Lauren Burns (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf) with a round of 105 to finish 12th.

Trine also had six golfers play as individuals as senior Allie Buttery (Clarkston, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) led the way with a 102 to tie for sixth. In 11th place, sophomore Laura Carey (Jonesboro, Ind./Madison Grant) finished her day with a round of 104. Junior Jennifer Sir Louis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) tied for 13th on the day after carding a round of 106. Sophomore Alexandra Ziaya (Flushing, Mich./Flushing Senior) finished tied for 16th with a score of 112. Fellow sophomore Stephanie Carson (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon East) carded a 116 on the afternoon to finish 18th. Freshman Alison Kubiak (Dyer, Ind./Hanover Central) completed the team with a 20th place finish with a score of 119.

Trine returns to the course on April 19 when they host the Trine Spring Invitational beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Zollner Golf Course.

 

4/7 - Thunder Fifth in first spring event

CANAL WINCHESTER, Ohio - In their first tournament of the spring, the Trine University women’s golf team placed fifth out of 12 teams at the Purple & White Invitational hosted by Capital University with a two-day score of 356-360-716.

Played at the par-72, 6,077 yard Westchester Golf Course, Allegheny College won the team title with a score of 327-323-650 and had the top individual in Liz Blyth who shot a two-day score of 74-75-149.

The Thunder finished just two strokes out of fourth behind host Capital. Freshman Amy Worthington (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) finished in a tie for fourth shooting a two-day total of 78-86-164 en-route to being named to the All-Tournament team. Senior Lauren Burns (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf) tied for 23rd shooting rounds of 99-84-183. Just two shots behind was freshman Mikala Freeland (Danville, Ind./Danville Community) who tied for 25th with scores of 90-95-185. Sitting in a tie for 38th was freshman Amanda McPherron (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) who shot a two-day total of 95-95-190. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder was another freshman in Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) who finished in a tie for 43rd, carding rounds of 93-100-193.

The team will next compete at the Manchester University Spring Invitational on April 13.

 

10/13 - Women’s Golf Sixth at Final Fall Event

 

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - The Trine University women’s golf team wrapped up their fall season with a sixth place finish at the two-round MIAA End of Season Jamboree with a two-day score of 379-363-742.

Played at the par-72, 5,897 yard Bedford Valley Golf Club, Olivet won the Jamboree with a 323-336-659, en-route to winning the conference championship. Olivet’s Theresa Damico won the individual medalist honors with a two-day score of 79-81-160.

Leading the Thunder was freshman Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) with a two-round score of 87-89-176 to finish in a tie for 18th. Standing alone in 27th was fellow freshman Amanda McPherron (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) with rounds of 94-92-186. Finishing in a tie for 30th was senior Lauren Burns (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf) with a two-day score of 97-92-189. Freshman Mikala Freeland (Danville, Ind./Danville Community) finished 35th, carding scores of 102-90-192. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder was sophomore Laura Carey (Jonesboro, Ind./Madison Grant) who placed 44th with a two-day score of 101-104-205.

Playing as an individual for the weekend was junior Jennifer Sir Louis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) who placed 47th with rounds of 106-114-220.

 

10/6 - Women’s Golf Seventh at MIAA Jamboree #4

ADRIAN, Mich. - The Trine University women’s golf team finished seventh at the most recent MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian College with a team score of 393.

Played at the par-72, 5,802 yard Lenawee Country Club, Saint Mary’s took the team title with a score of 345 while Theresa Damico from Olivet took medalist honored with a 77.

Leading the Thunder was sophomore Laura Carey (Jonesboro, Ind./Madison Grant) and freshman Mikala Freeland (Danville, Ind./Danville Community) who tied for 28th, shooting rounds of 96 respectively.  Freshman Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) tied for 31st carding a 99 for the afternoon.  Shooting a round of 102 was senior Lauren Burns (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf) who tied for 39th. Tying for 45th was sophomore Stephanie Carson with a score of 108 to round out the team scoring for the Thunder.

Playing as an individual was sophomore Alexandra Ziaya (Flushing, Mich./Flushing Senior) carding a round of 110 to finish in a tie for 47th.

Trine will finish their fall season as they play in the two-round MIAA season-ending tournament at Bedford Valley Country Club hosted by Hope beginning October 12.

 

9/26 - Golfers 7th at Saint Mary's Jamboree

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Trine University women’s golf team finished seventh at the most recently MIAA Jamboree hosted by Saint Mary’s with a team score of 380.

Played at the par-72, 6,071 yard Blackthorn Golf Club, Olivet took the team title with a score of 329 while Adrienne Plourde from Olivet  took medalist honored with a 76.

For the third time this season freshman Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) led the Thunder shooting a round of 85 to finish in a tie for 11th place. Sophomore Laura Carey (Jonesboro, Ind./Madison Grant) finished in 36th carding a 95 for the afternoon. In a tie for 41st were senior Lauren Burns (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf) and junior Jennifer Sir Louis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) with rounds of 100. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder was freshman Amanda McPherron (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth)  in 50th place with a score of 108.

Playing as an individual was sophomore Erika Milam (Roan, Ind./Manchester) carding a round of 101 to finish in a tie for 45th.

Trine will take a week off before returning to action on October 6 at Adrian for the fourth MIAA Jamboree of the season beginning at 1:00 p.m.

 

 

9/22 - Golfers 7th at Jamboree

ALMA, Mich. - The Trine University women’s golf team finished seventh at the second MIAA Jamboree of the season, finishing with a team score of 372.

Hosted by Alma College and played at the par-72, 5,916 yard Pine River Country Club, Olivet College took home the team honors with a score of 320. Olivet’s Theresa Damico took the individual medalist honors with a score of 4-over-par 76.

Freshman Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) led the Thunder carding a round of 86 to finish in a tie for 13th. Sophomore Laura Carey (Jonesboro, Ind./Madison Grant) finished in a tie for 35th with a round of 93. Jennifer Sir Louis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead), a junior, finished tied for 41st finishing her round with a 96. Senior Allie Buttery (Clarkston, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) completed her round with a score of 97 to finish tied for 43rd. Freshman Mikala Freeland (Danville, Ind./Danville Community) rounded out the team scoring in 45th place, carding a round of 99.

The next Jamboree will take place September 26 hosted by Saint Mary’s beginning at 1:00 p.m.

 

9/20 - Trine Women Golfers Fifth at Jamboree

 

OLIVET, Mich. - The Trine University women’s golf team had a solid start to their conference season as they finished fifth at their first MIAA Jamboree of the season with a team score of 361.

Hosted by Olivet College at the par-72, 5,834 yard Medalist Golf Club, Olivet also took home the team title with a score of 324 as well as the individual medalist honors by Theresa Damico with a 72.

Leading the way for the Thunder was freshman Amy Worthington (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) in a tie for eighth with a round of 84. Finishing in a tie for 23rd was senior Lauren Burns (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf) and freshman Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) who finished their day with rounds of 92 respectively. Carding a 93 to finish in a tie for 26th was freshman Amanda McPherron (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth). Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder was junior Jennifer Sir Louis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) finishing her round with a 101 to tie for 39th.

Playing as individuals were freshman Mikala Freeland (Danville, Ind./Danville Community) and senior Allie Buttery (Clarkston, Mich./Walled Lake Northern). Freeland placed 29th with a score of 93 while Buttery tied for 32nd, carding a round of 96.

Trine will take a day off before returning to action on September for the next MIAA Jamboree hosted by Alma College beginning at 1:00 p.m.

 

9/15 - Thunder Women Golfers Fifth at Manchester

 

WABASH, Ind. - The Trine University women’s golf team finished fifth out of nine teams at the Manchester Invitational with a team score of 365.

The event was played at the 6,037 yard, par-72 Honeywell Public Golf Course.

Indiana Wesleyan took the team title with a score of 356 as just nine strokes separated the top five teams. Britney Brooks of IWU also took home the individual medalist honors, shooting an 80 for the day.

Freshman Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) led the Thunder finishing fourth, shooting a round of 11-over-par 83. Fellow freshman Amy Worthington (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) finished with a round of 92 to tie for 21st. In a tie for 27th was sophomore Laura Carey (Jonesboro, Ind./Madison Grant) and freshman Amanda McPherron (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) with rounds of 95. Finishing out the team scores for the Thunder was senior Lauren Burns (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf) in a tie for 33rd with a round of 96.

The Thunder will take to the course on September 20 to compete in the first MIAA Jamboree of the year hosted by Olivet College with tee-times set for 1:00 p.m.

 

9/11 - Thunder Golfers Sweep Speiss Memorial Tournament

 

WAUSEON, Ohio - The Trine University men’s and women’s golf teams swept the Jon P. Speiss Memorial Collegiate Golf Tournament hosted by Defiance College. Trine freshman Amy Worthington (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) took home medalist honors for the second straight tournament.

Played at the Ironwood Golf Club, the par-72 course was played at 6,695 yards for the men and 5,885 yards for the women.

The men’s team won with a score of 306, besting Ohio Northern by two strokes. The Thunder were led by Freshman Bryce Moore (Richmond, Ind./Richmond) in second place with a round of 2-over-par 74, three strokes behind the medalist. Fellow freshman Connor Dwyer (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) was just one shot behind in a tie for third with a round of 75. Shooting a round of 78 to place tied for 11th was junior Nick Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble). Rounding out the men’s scoring in a tie for 14th with rounds of 79 were freshmen Miles Adams (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) and Cody Knapp (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center).

For the women, the Thunder took home the title with a team score of 343, 17 strokes better than second place Lourdes University. Worthington led the Thunder with a 4-over-par 76 to win by four shots and has now won each of her first two collegiate tournaments. Sitting alone in fifth was freshman Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) with a round of 86. Just one shot back from there in sixth was junior Jennifer Sir Louis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead). Sophomore Erika Milam (Roan, Ind./Manchester) finished in a tie for 13th with a round of 94. Rounding out the team scoring for the Thunder in a tie for 15th was freshman Amanda McPherron (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) carding a 95 for the round.

Both teams will next compete on September 15 with the men’s squad traveling to Adrian for the second MIAA Jamboree of the season, while the ladies will participate in the Manchester Fall Invitational.

 

 

9/4 - Thunder Third at own Kick-Off Classic

 

ANGOLA, Ind. - Trine University freshman women’s golfer Amy Worthington (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) took home medalist honors in her first collegiate tournament winning Trine’s own Kick-Off Classic with a round of 8-over-par 79. As a team, Trine placed third with a team score of 360.

Marian (IN) University took the team title with a score of 353 while Hope College finished just four shots head of the Thunder.

Worthington finished three shots ahead of the next closest player as she finished with a birdie and nine pars for the round. Sitting seven shots back in a tie for sixth was fellow freshman Kelcey Swisher (Williamsport, Ind./Seeger Memorial) with a round of 86. In a tie for 22nd was sophomore Laura Carey (Jonesboro, Ind./Madison Grant) with a score of 97. Seniors Lauren Burns (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf) and Allie Buttery (Clarkston, Mich./Walled Lake Northern) rounded out the team scoring with rounds of 98 and 100 to finish in a tie for 25th and 29th respectively.

Trine will take a couple of days off before returning to action at the two-day Olivet Fall Invitational beginning on September 7 at 2:00 p.m.
