3/4- thunder wrap up spring trip with loss to coe
ORLANDO, FLA.-- The Trine women's tennis team wrapped up their spring break trip with an 8-1 loss to Coe Tuesday morning at Sanlando Park.
The Koehawks, ranked 14th in the region, won all three doubles matches. Allison Marley (New Carlisle, Ind./New Prairie) picked up Trine's lone win of the day at no. 5 singles. The freshman split the first two sets before prevailing 10-7 in the tiebreaker. The win was Marley's first collegiate victory. Trine is now 4-5 overall on the season. Coe improves to 14-1.
Dianna Watson teamed up with Laura Birky for the win at no. 1 doubles and added a victory in singles play for Coe. Tamera Washington and Sarah Lasecki also took home victories in singles and doubles play for the Koehawks.
Trine returns to action Saturday, Mar. 15 when they travel to Grace for a 1:00 p.m. match.
3/3- thunder ladies fall to evangel
ORLANDO, FLA.-- The Trine women's tennis team was defeated by NAIA-foe Evangel University, 7-2, Monday night at Sanlando Park.
Marissa German (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) and Kaitlin Black (Crawfordsville, Ind./Southmont) got the Thunder on the board with a win in no. 3 doubles. The duo was able to pick up an 8-5 victory. Lexi Mack (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) picked up a win at no. 4 singles. After splitting the first two sets, Mack was able to prevail in an exciting 10-8 tiebreak. Trine falls to 4-4 overall with the loss.
The NAIA no. 4 ranked doubles pairing of Amy Fritz and Jenna Elliott paced Evangel to the victory. The duo earned a victory in no. 1 doubles and each picked up singles victories.
Trine returns to action Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. against Coe.
3/3- trine falls to division-ii foe cedarville
ORLANDO, FLA.-- The Trine women's tennis team was defeated by NCAA Division-II foe Cedarville, 9-0, Wednesday morning at Lake Cane.
Marissa German (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) provided a stiff test for counterpart Maryssa Herbert in the no. 5 singles court. After dropping the first set 6-4, the Thunder freshman rallied to take the second set 6-3 and force the tiebreak. Herbert took the tiebreak 10-5 to earn the point for Cedarville. The effort by German provided the toughtest test to a very solid Yellow Jackets squad. The loss drops Trine to 4-3 on the season. Cedarville is now 7-2 overall.
Results from Trine's match against Evangel University were not available at the time of writing. The Thunder return to action tomorrow morning when they take on Coe at 11:00 a.m.
3/2- thunder open spring season with victory
ORLANDO, FLA.-- The Trine women's tennis team opened their spring season with 5-4 victory over King's College (Pa.) Sunday afternoon.
Trine got great performances from Alexis Mack (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) and Jessica Huhnke (Newburgh, Ind./Castle), who each earned points in both singles and doubles play. The Thunder jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Huhnke and Lauren Schlueter (Akron, Ohio/Revere) earned an 8-0 win at no. 1 doubles, while Mack and Erin Kwaske (Jackson, Mich./Western) picked up the 8-6 win at no. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Huhnke picked up the win in the no. 1 court in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Mack won her match at no. 4 singles 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Marissa German (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth) picked up the win in her collegiate debut at no. 6 singles by a score of 6-0, 6-2 to secure the win for Trine.
With the victory, the Thunder improve to 4-2 on the season. King's College falls to 2-3.
The Thunder return to action for two matches tomorrow. They will take on Cedarville at 10:30 a.m. before taking on Evangel at 5:30 p.m.
9/29 - Netters End Year at MIAA Flighted Tournament
HOLLAND, Mich. - Over the weekend, the Trine University women’s tennis team wrapped up their fall season as they competed in the two-day MIAA Flighted Tournament hosted by Hope College. The Thunder finished the tournament with a 16-20 record. Trine picked up a win in each of the five draws as eight individual players also had at least one victory in singles action.
In the top singles draw, senior Lauren Schlueter (Akron, Ohio/Revere) fell in the back draw semi-finals 6-2, 6-0. Senior Jessica Huhnke (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) advanced to the quarterfinals in the A draw after winning her first match 7-5, 6-1 over Katie Blumberg of Albion.
Senior Chrissy Uphaus (Richmond, Ind./Centreville) and junior Erin Kwaske (Jackson, Mich./Western) both advanced to the quarterfinals in the B draw after winning their first two matches. Uphaus won 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2 before falling 6-1, 6-1. Kwaske won by identical scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2 before dropping her final match 6-0, 6-1. Also in the B draw, freshman Bailey Denton (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) picked up a win over Bethany Zoerhof of Calvin 6-1, 7-6 (8-5)
In the C draw, sophomore Alexis Mack (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) and freshman Abby Hodge (Berrien Springs, Mich./Berrien Springs) both won their opening matches 7-5, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-3 respectively. Freshman Kaitlin Black (Crawfordsville, Ind./Southmont) also got a win in the back draw 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 over Elizabeth Taylor from Alma.
All four of Trine’s doubles team advanced to the semi-finals as the team of Schlueter and Uphaus fell in the A back draw championship 8-5. The duo won their first match 8-3 before advancing to the finals by default. On the other side of the A draw, the team of Huhnke and Denton advanced to the semi’s by defeating Albion 8-4.
The B doubles draw saw Kwaske and Mack win their first two matches by identical scores of 8-6 before falling in the semi-finals to Albion 8-2. Black and fellow freshman Allison Marley (New Carlisle, Ind./New Prairie) would advance to the back draw semi’s with an 8-3 victory over Olivet before dropping their match 8-3 to Saint Mary’s.
9/18 - Tennis Teams Split Fall Dual Finale
GOSHEN, Ind. - In their final dual matches of the fall season, the Trine University tennis teams split with Goshen College as the women’s team won 6-3 while the men’s team fell 7-2. The men finish the fall with a 3-1 record while the women finish 3-2.
For the men, sophomore Nick Cassidy (Archbold, Ohio/Perrysburg) won the lone singles match for the Thunder as he defeated Krishnan Ganesan in the No. 5 pairings 6-0, 5-7, 10-8. Cassidy teamed with senior Nick Ihrie (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) to take the third doubles match 9-7. Also in doubles action the team of sophomore Caleb Knust (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) and senior Joe Dunbar (Indianapolis, Ind./Guerin Catholic) fell just shy of a victory 9-7 at the No. 1 position.
The women’s team swept the doubles matches in convincing fashion. In the No. 1 spot, senior Jessica Huhnke (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) and freshman Bailey Denton (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) took the match 8-2. At second doubles, seniors Chrissy Uphaus (Richmond, Ind./Centreville) and Lauren Schlueter (Akron, Ohio/Revere) won 8-3 while junior Erin Kwaske (Jackson, Mich./Western) and sophomore Lexi Mack (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) took the third position 8-4.
In singles action, Denton earned a point in the No. 3 match winning 6-1, 6-1. Schlueter took the No. 4 match 6-2, 6-1 while Mack needed a third set to win the fifth position 3-6, 6-4, 10-3. Ali Marley (New Carlisle, Ind./New Prairie) fell in a tough 3-set match at the sixth position 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.
The women’s team will now compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championship hosted by DePauw University beginning on Sept. 20.
For the men, they will also compete in the ITA Regional Championship which will be hosted by Kalamazoo College starting Sept. 27.
