Proactive Emergency Measures
Dear Trine University Students, Parents, Faculty and Staff.
The health and safety of our students is our number one concern. I want to assure you that Trine University has been monitoring the status of H1N1 and preparing for the flu season in order to provide a safe environment for our students. Currently, we have no suspected or confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus at Trine University. To prevent the spread of H1N1, we have prepared in the following ways:
- Bottles of hand sanitizer have been distributed to all residential students
- Informational posters have been posted in all residence halls
- All public areas and surfaces are being sanitized daily
- Fever strips with instructions and informational sheets outlining common cold, seasonal flu and pandemic flu, as well as strategies to help control the spread of H1N1 were distributed to all residential students
- An isolation area will be available if a student is unable to return home until fever free for 24 hours.
We are working closely with the Steuben County Health Department to monitor flu conditions and to make informed decisions about the best steps to take concerning our institution. We will keep you updated with new information as it becomes available to us via our website www.trine.edu.
Students who experience flu symptoms are encouraged to return home and isolate themselves as much as possible for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever without the use of fever-reducing medications. Those unable to return home should contact Campus Safety immediately as isolation rooms have been set up. Individuals with flu symptoms and fever should not attend class, so as to get the necessary rest for recovery and not infect fellow students. Should class absence occur, students are expected to contact their professors to be excused. Professors will work with students who are ill to help them keep up with their coursework while they are unable to attend class.
Students with flu-like symptoms may visit Cameron Hospital or Urgent Care. If transportation is needed, please contact Campus Safety at 260.316.1877. Please contact Student Life at 260.665.4168 to report any and all suspected or confirmed cases of H1N1.
Classes and other activities on campus are continuing as planned. In the event of a flu outbreak, Trine University’s emergency response team, working with local public health officials, will make recommendations concerning changes in or cancellations of classes or campus activities. Any such decision will be communicated to the campus community through email, Trine’s website, TextCaster and other communication avenues.
If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Student Life at 260.665.4168.
Sincerely,
Randy White
Dean of Students
