Trine seeks renewal of HLC accreditation
In September, Trine University will host a team of peer reviewers from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (ncahlc.org) as it seeks to renew it institutional accreditation.
A 15-member team at Trine has been preparing for this visit since September 2015. They recently completed an assurance report, an institution self-study based on the commission’s criteria, and will provide leadership throughout the summer and subsequent visit.
The last time Higher Learning Commission (HLC) reviewers were on campus for a comprehensive site visit was in 2006 and Trine was accredited for a decade, the maximum number of years. Trine has been accredited by the HLC since 1966. The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) is an independent corporation that was founded in 1895 as one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States. HLC accredits degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions in the North Central region, which includes Indiana and 18 other states.
Five peer reviewers are scheduled to be on Trine’s campus Sept. 14 and 15. Peer reviewers play an essential role in the accreditation process. They are responsible for assuring an institution is complying with the accreditation criteria established by the commission. The HLC teams certify organizational quality by interviewing faculty, staff, students, administrators and the Board of Trustees and reviewing institutional policies and procedures.
The Criteria for Accreditation, of which there are five, are the standards of quality by which the Commission determines whether an institution merits accreditation or reaffirmation of accreditation, according to the agency’s website, ncahlc.org.
