Trine hosts 36th high school math competition

West Noble, Warsaw claim top honors

 

Nathaniel Johnson of West Noble High School in Ligonier, Ind. claimed the top individual advanced title and the team from Warsaw, Ind. earned the top team award in Trine University’s 36th annual High School Math Competition Wednesday in the university’s Hershey Hall.

Mathematics students from 16 area schools, a total of 123 students and 29 teams, converged on the university to test their mathematics skills against those of other regional students and compete for Trine scholarships.

Johnson will receive a $5,000 annual renewable scholarship if he enrolls at Trine, and Zac Erba, Alek Jansen, Andrew Cox and Liesl Schroedl of the winning Warsaw High School team will each receive $3,000 annual renewable Trine scholarships. Warsaw mathematics teacher Alan Clark received a $1,000 stipend to use for math education as the top team’s instructor.

Second place advanced individual honors went to David Harvey of Marion High School in Marion, Ind., while the Marion team of Harvey, Andrew Schoer, Kylie Ancil and Kirby Kohlmorgen also claimed second place team honors. Their teacher, Doug Porter, received a $500 stipend to be used for mathematics education.

Erba of Warsaw also placed third in the individual advanced competition, while the team of Dillon Flint, J.J. Erickson, Cole Limber and Bryce Hussey from Ayersville High School in Defiance, Ohio, placed third as a team. Ayersville math teacher Rosie Kieffer received a $250 stipend for math education.

Individual elementary division winners were Hussey of Ayersville, first place; Limber of Ayersville, second place; and Zach Schenkel of Bishop Luers High School in Fort Wayne, Ind., third place.
