Competition tests hands-on solutions

Trine University will host the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) TEAMS competition for high school students on Tuesday, Feb. 16 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in the upper level of Sponsel Library in the University Center.

TEAMS is an annual theme-based competition giving students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to discover engineering and how they can make a difference in the world. Students become part of the action as they work together and use the practical applications of math and science to answer engineering questions about everyday world challenges.

This year’s competition will take the theme “Water, Water, Everywhere!” to examine the critical and global need of providing access to one of nature's most vital resources on earth: clean water. Teams of four to eight students will use real-world applications of mathematics and science in a fun, theme-based environment.

The first segment, an 80-question multiple choice test, will be from 9:30-11 a.m., while another session centered on answering four open-ended questions will be from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. From 1-2 p.m. teams will participate in a short awards ceremony in Fabiani Theatre, followed by lunch in Whitney Commons.

Participating Indiana schools are Angola and Fremont in Steuben County, Westview in LaGrange County, and Canterbury and Concordia Lutheran in Allen County. Kalamazoo Christian and Kalamazoo Area Math and Science Center in Michigan will also participate. Performance summaries will be given to each coach.

Trine’s Dr. John Wagner, McKetta Department of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering chair and professor, coordinates JETS activities for the American Society of Engineering Technology. For more information, contact Dr. Wagner at 260.665.4226.
