From left, front, are Rachel McGuinness, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Courtney Stahl, Lowell; Elizabeth Wentz, Toledo, Ohio; Eric Spann, Detroit, Mich.; and Emily Chancellor, Angola. In the back from left are Kevin Dahlstrom, Indianapolis; Julia Nell, Ada, Okla.; Scott Flory, Goshen; and Matthew Smith, Buchanan, Mich. Catherine Hurst of St. Joseph, Mich. and Danielle Hurley of Greenfield are not pictured.

The contest name derives from Tri-State alumnus Walter Cunningham, BSBA 1956, through whose support the contest originated years ago and whose generosity provided cash gifts for this year’s contest.

Full- and part-time main and branch campus students pitted their skills against those of fellow writers in the categories of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and academic writing. Winners received $50, and their names will be inscribed on a plaque in Taylor Hall. Their writings and honorable mention entries will be published in a new online journal of student writing to be launched this spring by the Department of Language & Humanities.

Winners were Kevin Dahlstrom, Julia Nell, Scott Flory, Matthew Smith, Rachel McGuinness, Courtney Stahl, Elizabeth Wentz, Eric Spann, Emily Chancellor, Catherine Hurst and Danielle Hurley.
