Saint Joseph students sweep Trine's annual math competition



ANGOLA — Saint Joseph High School’s math team swept the 37th annual High School Mathematics Competition at Trine University this month. More than 150 students from 17 schools competed in the event, which awards renewable scholarships to winning students and stipends to top teachers.



Saint Joseph sent two teams to the competition. Math teacher Patrick Soboleski led students Quynh Luong, Tong Tong Yang, Jeff Heath and Hong Chao Li to a first-place team win, and they will receive $3,000 annual renewable scholarships if they enroll at Trine. Luong and Yang won second place individual advanced and individual elementary awards respectively.



Saint Joseph students Meng Ma, Thomas Choi, Allison Xu and Nicholas Wawrykow comprised the school’s other team. Ma and Choi won individual advanced and individual elementary awards respectively. Ma will receive a $5,000 annual renewable scholarship if she enrolls at Trine. Xu captured the third-place individual elementary award. Soboleski won a $1,000 stipend to use for math education.


 
Warsaw High School students Eric Smolen, Elise Smith, Grant Carlson and Bryce Carter captured a second place team win. Warsaw High math teacher Amanda Taylor received a $500 stipend.



Quincy High School students Mike Wilkinson, Devarsh Umashanker, Megan Karney and Evan Young led their school to a third place win. Quincy High math teacher Jeff Powell won a $250 stipend.



Westview Junior-Senior High School student Tabitha Lehman captured the third-place individual advanced award.
