Distinguished Speaker Series continues

Basketball legend Quinn Buckner to speak on campus Oct. 3

Indiana University basketball legend and sports analyst Quinn Buckner will speak at Trine University Oct. 3 as part of the school’s Distinguished Speaker Series.

Buckner is one of only three people in the history of basketball to win a championship at every level – high school, college, professional and Olympics. He captained two Illinois state championships in high school.  He then served as captain of the 1976 Indiana University NCAA Championship Team, the last college basketball team to go undefeated and win the national championship. The same year, he captained the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic Basketball Team. He played 10 seasons in the NBA, including the 1983-84 season, when he was a member of Boston’s NBA Championship team.

“We are thrilled to have such an accomplished athlete speak to our students,” said David Finley, Ph.D., Trine’s vice president for academic affairs. “He is an engaging speaker, who believes that a solid education sets students up for success in their careers and lives.”

Buckner currently is in his 14th season as an analyst for the Pacers’ cable television games on FSN Indiana. In July 2004, Buckner was named the vice president of communications for Pacers Sports & Entertainment.

He has served as a member of the Big Ten Advisory Council, Vice President of the NBPA (National Basketball Players Association) and was Vice President of USA Basketball (the body that selects Men’s and Women’s Olympic teams).

Buckner also is active in the Indianapolis community, currently serving on the boards of directors for the Pacers Foundation, Special Olympics Indiana, Community Health Foundation, Center for Leadership Development, the Indianapolis Zoological Society, Indiana Youth Institute, The First Tee-Indianapolis United Way of Indiana, YMCA of Greater Indianapolis and the Indiana University Foundation.
