Local students attending summer science camp at Trine
Former astronaut founds camps
Forty-eight students have been selected to attend the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp at Trine University July 12-24.
The two-week residential camp is for students entering grades 6-8. Designed for traditionally underserved and under-represented middle school students, it promotes exciting careers in science by providing a fun-filled setting in which they can gain a deeper understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The students are equally represented by young men and women, with no cost to their families.
Dr. Harris, a former NASA astronaut and the first African-American to walk in space, created the camp four years ago with support from ExxonMobil. Students will explore themes such as “Mission to Mars,” “Revolutionary Robotics,” and “Energy and Motion.” Dr. Harris will visit to speak with the students on Friday, July 17, and media from the students’ hometowns and the entire region are invited to take advantage of activities and interview Dr. Harris during Media Day from 8:30 a.m.-noon in Hershey Hall.
