Raises all-time high for scholarships

Trine University’s 19th annual Alumni & Friends Scholarship Golf Outing raised over $67,000 for scholarships, topping the all-time high of $52,000 raised last year.

In all, 236 golfers from 59 teams played the morning and afternoon flights, an increase of 24 percent in number of participants from last year, said Sarah Brown, director of alumni relations and events. Alumni and friends traveled from as far as the East Coast to mingle, renew acquaintances, enjoy a day on the links and support the future of upcoming Trine students.

Claiming the lowest score and first place was the team from Jim Ingledue Construction, comprised of Jim Ingledue, Eric Olson, Ken Wilson and Brian Ray. The team from Glendarin Hills, Jeff Rienche, Matt Funkhouser, Glen Kelly and John Weicht placed second, while the Basketball Stars team of Trine assistant athletic director Rob Harmon, Chad Lacrosse, Rob Held and NBA player Brian Cardinal took third place.

The winner of an inaugural event, a golf ball drop from a helicopter, was Paul Yoder, a 1971 civil engineering graduate. Yoder donated his winnings of over $1,000 back to the university to provide a named scholarship for use in fall 2010.

Trustee Steve LaHood and his wife, Wendy, sponsored the scholarship golf outing, while Fifth Third Bank, Trine board chairman Jerry Allen and Chuck and Rita Nedele were lunch sponsors. AMI Investment Management and Jim Ingledue Construction Inc. were eagle sponsors.

All funds will go to the university’s student scholarship fund to offset the cost of tuition. Trine will devote $12 million to need-based scholarships and grants this year.

“It was outstanding to see the overwhelming amount of support we received for this year’s scholarship fundraiser,” Brown said. “I believe this was a memorable event for the players, with new games on the course, a putting green challenge, a shoot-out for a pool table and the helicopter ball drop. We are grateful to our alumni and friends for their commitment and generosity.”

The university will host the 20th annual Alumni & Friends Scholarship Golf Outing on Aug. 6, 2010.
