Trine sophomore honored at banquet

Trine University sophomore finance major Jeremy Berry is among 32 outstanding first-generation students from 32 independent college campuses in Indiana who will be honored, along with the mentor who most encouraged him to seek a college degree, at the Realizing the Dream banquet in Indianapolis on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Made possible by a grant to the Independent Colleges of Indiana from the Lilly Endowment, Realizing the Dream recognizes the triumphs of first-generation students in their first year of college. Student honorees are Indiana high school graduates who subsequently demonstrated superior academic performance during their first year of studies and exhibited leadership in campus or community activities. A $2,000 grant will be mailed to Trine to be deposited into Berry’s account and applied toward the cost of his education.

The program also celebrates the roles played by teachers and parents in shaping student aspirations for a college education. After being chosen by Trine, Berry named Jim Folland of Churubusco High School as the educator or counselor who most influenced him to attend college. Folland will receive a $1,000 professional development award.

Attending the banquet in addition to Berry, his family and friends will be Trine University Vice President for University Development Bob Remington and his wife, Carolyn.
