Shape Up, Steuben!
Trine event supports healthy habits
Trine University’s Department of Sports and Hospitality Management hosted an inaugural health and fitness event for all fifth-graders in Steuben County on Friday from noon-2 p.m. on the university’s Shive Field. The department’s Shape Up Steuben! aims to promote healthy lifestyles and fitness activities to all participating students. One hundred-fifty Students from Carlin Park Elementary School in Angola, Fremont Middle School in Fremont, and Pleasant Lake Elementary School in Pleasant Lake participated.
The department’s Teaching of Sport Skills class lead the local students in activities and games to promote fitness and health. Participants took home helpful information on nutrition, sleep requirements, and exercise for a healthy lifestyle, and also received a two-week health log in which to record their daily exercise, sleep, nutrition, and TV/video game/computer use. The resource helped them track the time spent on each during an average day to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.
The Trine Department of Sports and Hospitality Management hosted the event to broaden community knowledge of its program, Trine University, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle for the county’s students.
