Angola Mayor visits campus for honor

In recognition of Trine University’s Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) conference win, 10-0 season, and NCAA Division III playoff berth, Angola Mayor Richard Hickman proclaimed Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 Trine University  Thunder Football Day during a visit to the campus Nov. 21.

Trine is the only team in the conference to take the title undefeated in 10 years of conference history. The team finished the season No. 20 in the nation and No. 2 in the region for NCAA Division III schools.

Their coach, Matt Land, has been nominated for 2008 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year. Land took over a 0-10 record three years ago and rebuilt the football program, leading to the undefeated 2008 season.

“Trine University’s Thunder football team has represented themselves, the university, and the city with utmost dignity and honor throughout the entire football season,” Hickman’s proclamation states. “I urge all citizens to recognize and appreciate the dedication and effort put forth by the members and staff.”
