Trine golf outing tops record funds

Trine University′s 20th annual Alumni & Friends Scholarship Golf Outing Aug. 6 at the university′s Zollner Golf Course raised over $68,000 for student scholarships, topping last year′s all–time high.

Alumni traveled from the East Coast and other parts of the country to support the university′s financial aid program, which will channel $17 million into academic and need–based grants and scholarships to students this academic year.

Alumni enjoyed a near–perfect day on the meticulous, rolling championship course, some returning to the revitalized campus for the first time in many years. Pete Durocher, who earned a mechanical engineering degree in 1961, traveled from Elmira, N.Y. for his first trip back in nearly 50 years.

The trip was worth it, according to Durocher. "The campus is very impressive. The new facilities are first–rate, and they blend in architecturally with the older buildings which have been upgraded and restored," he said. He planned a return trip for the 50th reunion of his graduating class during the university′s Homecoming weekend Oct. 7–9.

Golfers competed for prizes throughout the day, wrapping up with a dinner in Witmer Clubhouse. Trustee and alumnus Steve LaHood and his wife, Wendy, sponsored the scholarship golf outing, while alumni Jerry Allen, board of trustees chairman, and his wife, Jorja, and Rieke Packaging were dinner sponsors. Fifth Third Bank and Chuck and Rita Nedele were lunch sponsors. AMI Investment Management, Jim Ingledue Construction Inc. and alumnus Scott Fergusson and his wife, Sheryl, were other sponsors.

"We appreciate the phenomenal support we received for this year′s scholarship event," said Trine University President Earl D. Brooks II. "Many new players and teams joined our loyal annual supporters, and their generous contributions will put our excellent education within the grasp of more deserving students."

The university will host the third annual Scholarship Golf Classic in warm and sunny Sarasota, Fla. at the Ritz Carlton Member′s Club on Jan. 27, 2011. If you are interested in this unique and exciting outing, contact Sarah Brown at browns@trine.edu. Save the date for the 21st annual Alumni & Friends Scholarship Golf Outing on Aug. 5, 2011 at Zollner Golf Course.

8-9 October 2010

Join your former classmates, teammates, fraternity brothers and sorority sisters for Homecoming 2010 on Oct. 8 and 9. An exciting lineup of events is in store for you and your family.

Some of the highlights include the Homecoming Dinner on Friday night, where you will see fellow alums receive honors and awards, enjoy an excellent dinner, hear the Trine University Jazz Band and enjoy plenty of time to reminisce with friends and former professors.

On Saturday, attend the dedication and tour the new Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium, take in the tailgate lunch while being entertained by Duke Tumatoe and watch the highly ranked Thunder football team hit the field.

Are you celebrating a reunion this year? Make a trip back to campus and down memory lane. "I want to encourage all of the class of 1960 to join us as we celebrate our 50th reunion this fall. Now is the time to make it back to our alma mater – the campus and overall academic enhancements are well worth the trip. Plus, it will be great to see everyone," says Tom Lundregan, EE ′60.

On Location

7 July 2010

Ray Stuckey, Executive Director of University Advancement, visited alum Jim Hanna (ME ′59) and his wife Carol at their location, Mectron Engineering Co., in Saline, Mich.

Jim is the owner and CEO of Mectron, which produces high–speed inspection systems. Their machinery inspects parts for defects and removes those parts from the manufacturing line. Mectron sells to the top fastener companies in the automotive, aircraft and defense industries in which indentifying tight tolerances is critical. Jim and Carol opened the company in 1968. Although he′s not slowing down, Jim is focusing more on the development side. He has many new product lines in the works. "I use my education from Tri–State every day. I even refer to some of my old textbooks from time to time," he said. If you are interested in learning more about Mectron, please visit www.mectron.net .

Let us visit you "On Location." Contact Nancy Roberts at 260.665.4114 or robertsn@trine.edu to schedule a member of the Office of Alumni & Development to drop in and see you in action.

Support Trine Today

Fall 2010

Dear Friends,

I hope this finds you enjoying an excellent summer. As we begin the back–to–school season at Trine, I am reminded of my good fortune to be surrounded by some of the nation′s best and well–rounded young people. We are working hard to recruit and retain these students, but we cannot do it without your support.

Annual Fund gifts are vital to the University now more than ever before. Tuition does not cover the full cost of educating a Trine student, and your gift provides scholarships, new equipment and an operating budget to allow us to continue delivering the services of a premier institution. Your support strengthens our resolve to inspire excellence in our students. On behalf of everyone at Trine University, we will appreciate your consideration of a gift to our Annual Fund.

With gratitude,

Robert L. Remington
Vice President of Alumni and Development
