Dining Distinctively

The dining program at Trine University has been included in the Dining Halls of Distinction recognition program by University Business Magazine. The Dining Halls of Distinction designation denotes excellence in all aspects of dining operations, including atmosphere, service, variety of offerings, guest satisfaction, environmental sustainability, and financial stability.

Higher education institutions from across the nation submitted their dining programs for consideration, with a total number of 65 entries received. "Competition was strong, but some clear winners did emerge during the judging process," said Melissa Ezarik, managing editor of University Business. Entries were evaluated by three editors and the magazine′s art director (also a college parent), a recent college grad, a graduate student, and Dr. Neal Raisman, a higher education consultant and former college president. Four main winners and eight runners–up were selected from the entries.

"The judges thought the contemporary black–and–white color scheme chosen for Whitney Commons was just striking. The facility, which is managed by Bon Appetit, offers views of campus on one side and interior views of the university center′s atrium on another. As for the food, nothing says home cooking like preparing actual recipes from students′ homes. One recipe per week from a family is offered, and the program culminates in a contest," Ezarik said.

"We are proud University Business Magazine has chosen to showcase our Whitney Commons in its Dining Halls of Distinction feature," said Trine University President Dr. Earl D. Brooks II. "When we built our new University Center, we tailored the aesthetics and culinary services of Whitney Commons to the needs of our students. We have received very positive feedback on their dining experience at Trine."

Holiday Frenzy

Trine′s Office of Admission hosted 77 prospective students and over 200 guests at its Holiday Frenzy visit day on Dec. 5. Among the students were 70 seniors, four juniors, one freshman and two transfer students.

Families were welcomed by Dr. Brooks (who was kindly interrupted by the Trine Athletic′s mascot, Storm), Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. David Finley, Vice President for Enrollment Management Scott Goplin and students Jenna Richardson, Ryan Gruell and Trevor Derby. Visitors enjoyed a video on Trine′s active student life, then joined their Trine guides for a cross–campus interactive tour to gather information from the offices of student life, admission, financial aid, career services, student success and athletics.

After these interactive sessions, students met with the deans and faculty members in their degree programs to learn more about why Trine should be considered in their search for the best academic environment. Representatives met with families individually to answer questions and get to know their prospects.

Families then enjoyed brunch in Whitney Commons, showcasing the food service Trine students regularly experience. The dining facility was filled to near capacity, and guests enjoyed the many holiday displays.

Luau in January, Trine′s next visit day, will be Saturday, Jan. 23.
