Fall and Winter Sports Update

FOOTBALL
The accolades continue to roll in for Trine University football players after the team′s foray into the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs and eventual loss to defending national champion University of Wisconsin–Whitewater. The Thunder capped the 2010 season at 10–1, 6–0 in the MIAA, making it the team′s third consecutive undefeated MIAA season.

The national audience didn′t overlook the team′s performance either. The Thunder earned their highest rankings since jumping to the NCAA level. The team is ranked 12th by d3football.com and eighth by the AFCA.

Senior Eric Watt is one of four finalists being considered for the prestigious Gagliardi Trophy, the division III equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. Watch the Trophy presentation live on Dec. 16, at 7 p.m.

Seniors Tyler Terry of Stroh, Ind., Watt, Tom Wyman of Lake Station, Mich., Christian Verley of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Aaron Selking of Decatur, Ind., were named to the D3football.com 2010 All–North Region Team.

Trine coach Matt Land was named the D3football.com 2010 North Region Coach of the Year.

The program bids adieu to 26 seniors. In their four seasons, the graduates strung together a 16–game home winning streak stretching from October 2007 and finished 29–1 in the regular season since 2007.

The 2010 Trine football team joins just one of 400 teams of all time in NAIA, NCAA Division II and Division III to score more than 500 points in a season. The Thunder′s 554 points, is 170th in a record that dates to at least 1890.

Men′s Basketball
Basketball season is upon us. The men′s basketball team currently is on a six–game winning streak dating back to a season–opening setback to Franklin. The Thunder captured the Mount Saint Joseph Tournament crown. The coaching staff is very encouraged by the talent and skill their players are bringing to the MIAA, which is traditionally considered to be one of the toughest leagues in Division III. Trine is currently 7–1 overall. The team will kick off conference play in January.

Wrestling
Trine wrestling enters the season ranked No. 22 in the country. Before the season is done, the Thunder will have faced no less than 15 ranked teams in dual or tournament matches. Junior George Markou won the 174–pound class at the Indiana Little State Tournament Dec. 3 and 4. Six other wrestlers finished in the top four in their weight classes. Head Coach Dan Callahan says several of his wrestlers have the potential to make the national championships in March. As a team, the goal is clear: win the Midwest Regional in February.

Women′s basketball
With just a few non–conference games ahead before the start of the new year, the Lady Thunder are tuning up their game for Michigan Intercollegiate play. At press time, Trine is 3–3, 1–0 in the MIAA after a win against Kalamazoo Dec. 4. Some early injuries created some pre–season adjustments, but the team has been proving their competitiveness with younger players stepping up in the fight.

Vote for Coach Land!

Dear Thunder supporters,

As you may know the Trine University football team qualified for their third–consecutive NCAA playoffs and climbed as high as No. 8 in the American Football Coaches Association top 25 poll and No.12 in the d3football.com top 25. The Thunder have gone 29–1 in the last three regular seasons, claiming the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship crown in 2008, 2009 and 2010. In addition, we find out later this week if Eric Watt claims the Gagliardi Trophy for the 2010 season. (Eric made the finals in part to fan voting and support from you!!!)

Now, Liberty Mutual Insurance has recently named Trine University′s head football coach Matt Land as one of five Division III finalists for the 2010 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award…the leading college football coaching honor which celebrates coaches for their sportsmanship, integrity, responsibility, excellence and for giving back to their teams, schools and communities, on and off field.

Through December 28th, please visit http://www.coachoftheyear.com/ to vote for Coach Land. You can vote once daily, per computer.

Liberty Mutual will announce the Division III winner on January 10th in Scottsdale, Ariz., prior to the BCS National Championship game. If Coach Land wins, he will receive $50,000 to donate to the non–profit charity of his choice and a $20,000 grant to Trine University′s alumni association. This is an amazing opportunity, not only for Coach Land and the university, but also for the community. Coach has chosen a Steuben County non–profit to receive the $50,000 gift if he were to land (no pun intended) the honors of Coach of the Year! Please vote every day and forward this message on to your friends and family!
