Trine to host 2012 Women’s Golf Championship
More than 101 golfers and 19 teams will converge on Trine University in May 2012 for the annual NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship. This will mark the first time the university has hosted an NCAA national championship.
On six other occasions Trine has hosted a national championship event. As an NAIA program, the university held the 1987, 1990 and 1992 men’s golf national championships. Hershey Hall was the site of the NAIA’s Division II Women’s Basketball National Championships in 1996 and 1997. Trine also hosted the Division III Midwest Wrestling Regional in 2009.
Softball post-season run ends in semi-final round
Trine’s fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA tournament ended in the semi-final of the Adrian Regional dropping a 19-7 decision to Hiram.
The Thunder (30-13, 10-6 MIAA) finished 3-2 in the regional, just short of playing for the championship. Trine swept the MIAA tournament, upsetting 11th-ranked Alma twice to advance to the regional.
Andi Gasco (Levering, Mich./Petoskey), first-baseman Lauren Harris (Uniontown, Ohio/Hoover) and designated hitter Casey Baker (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich) were selected to the All-Tournament team at the Adrian regional. Gasco and Harris were also honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Gasco was a first-team All-Central Region first-team. Harris made the third team.
Trine golfer selected to regional team
Terence Clingaman (Stryker, Ohio/Stryker) was named to the Division III PING All-Great Lakes
Region team presented by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Nearly 70 Division III golfers were named to the six region teams: Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Great Lakes, Central and West. Clingaman recently graduated with a degree in golf management.
Larson Academic All-District
Trine wrestler Elias Larson (Orland Park, Ill./Marion Catholic) has garnered a number of awards for his athletic performance. Now he’s been cited for his academic success as well. Larson was named to the Capital One Academic All-District Five At–Large second-team.
The 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-District Men's At-Large Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performance on athletic competition and in the classroom.
The Academic All-District teams include the student-athletes from eight geographic districts in the United States and Canada. More than 200 college NCAA Division III athletics were named to the first and second teams in the college division alone. Larson, a sophomore mechanical engineering major, has maintained a 3.78 grade-point-average.
In two seasons, he has compiled a 65-17 record, including finishing third at the 2011 NCAA Division III national championship (157 lbs.) and was an All-American at the national event.
In 2010-11, Larson was also ranked as high as sixth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s individual rankings. He also was an NWCA All-Academic team selection this past winter.

Thunder Club Golf
The athletic department hosted its second annual Thunder Club Golf Outing in May and it’s quickly becoming a tradition. Complete with a dinner, refreshments and prizes, it’s always an opportunity for friends of the program to spend time with the coaches and athletic administrators. It’s also a key fundraising tool for the department. Watch the athletic website and Thunderbolts for details on the third annual Thunder Club Golf Outing.
