Where’s Francisco Ortiz, ′99 Criminal Justice Major?
Since graduating from Tri-State in 1999, Francisco “Cisco” Ortiz has been involved in various fields of criminal and juvenile justice, including law enforcement, social services and court systems throughout Indiana and Michigan.
“I have worked with adult felons, juvenile delinquents, homeless teens and foster children,” Ortiz said.
He continued his education at Indiana Wesleyan University, graduating in 2007 with a Master of Science in Management degree. With the addition of a graduate degree, he was able to obtain occupations as a program leader, program manager and team leader, all of which helped lead him to his current position as a jail commander for the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department.
“I view my career as a ladder of experiential progress which has placed me in a wonderful opportunity to continue learning each and every day,” Ortiz said.
Ortiz also said that during his years at Tri-State, having educators who brought professional experiences to the classroom was a huge advantage to his education.
“I felt that my professors were teaching us what we needed to know, as if we were entering the field that day,” Ortiz said. “We were able to have discussions and … we gained knowledge from each others’ contributions to the course.”
Today, Ortiz enjoys spending time with his family. He said that with Trine University being so close to home, he has started taking his children to football games and other events on campus.
“They get so excited when we drive through and see all of the ‘big buildings,’ the football stadium and the new field house,” Ortiz said. “They look forward to attending Trine in the future.”
