Fall 2010

Sports Update

Trine athletes have entered another exciting fall sports season. Highlights from the start of the season include:

The Trine University men′s golf team just missed its first MIAA championship and a berth in the NCAA Championship earlier this month. Calvin edged the Thunder by two strokes to win the title.

Trine welcomed its new field hockey program this year. Freshman Tristen Huntley has excelled in goal, recording three 16 save games this season.

The men′s soccer team started its season with a powerful scoring attack. Andre Hilson was named an MIAA Player of the Week twice. Rudy Cantrell also was selected as MIAA Player of the Week. The Thunder opened up the season 4–0 and outscored opponents 20–2 during that span. Hilson leads the Thunder with eight goals followed by Curtis Holcom with seven. Both have scored hat–tricks this season. The Thunder are tied for fourth place, five points after Kalamazoo, in the MIAA, thanks in part to a 1–0 shutout over perennial power Hope and played to a 1–1 tie with nationally seventh–ranked Calvin.

Women′s golf team members Katlyn Pero and Amanda Mainstone posted top 10 finishes this fall to lead Trine to a fourth–place finish in the MIAA standings.

The Trine University football team has received the highest national ratings in its history as an NCAA program. The team is ranked in the top 10 in the country in the American Football Coaches Poll and 15th in the D3football.com poll. Quarterback Eric Watt is a candidate for the prestigious Gagliardi Trophy, which honors the outstanding senior in Division III football. Watt achieved MIAA player of the week honors twice, set a new school record with 62 career touchdown passes and has the highest quarterback efficiency rating in the nation. Teammates Aaron Selking and Brock Reinig have also won Player of the Week distinctions from the MIAA.

Coach Land of Thunder football is once again up for the Libery Mutual Coach of the Year Award. Please suppport Coach Land and the Thunder football program by voting today!

Senior lacrosse player takes skills to Europe

August 2010

Trine University senior Kayla Grieser had the opportunity to take her lacrosse skills to Europe this summer. Grieser is a member of the U.S. women′s lacrosse team selected by USA Athletes International. She participated in the Berlin Open, the oldest Lacrosse event in Europe and she also played exhibition games in the Czech Republic in June.

"It was a once in a lifetime opportunity," Grieser said. "I don′t think I would ever get another chance like this."

The lacrosse team was made up of women from around the United States, and each player represented a different philosophy and coaching style. Some women came from established programs with long histories of success, and others such as Grieser came from relatively new programs.

Grieser is a chemistry education major from Mentor, Ohio. From her first days as a Trine freshman, Grieser was thrust into the role of a scorer. On the U.S. team, her coaches made her a passer and her job shifted to concentrating more on setting her teammates up for goals.

"I improved myself more than anything," Grieser said. While in Europe, Grieser also visited Berlin and Prague, tried new cuisine and interacted with people from other cultures. "I′ve learned to appreciate what we have in the U.S," Grieser said.
