2008-09 Outlook
The Trine University men's basketball team is enthusiastic and optimistic about the 2008-09 season. The Thunder finished with a 9-16 record and a fourth place finish (6-8) in the always-rugged Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Thunder look to vie for a conference championship this season with several veteran players returning. [view more]
Trine junior Wes Weir (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) was named to the All-MIAA
Second-Team.
In 26 games, he averaged 14.5 points and 2.0 rebounds. He shot 41.6 percent from the
field (133-of-320), 41.5 percent from three-point range (88-of-212), and 71 percent from
the free-throw line (22-of-31). Seven times Weir scored 20 points, including a 29 point
game January 29 at Alma.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin shot 53 percent from beyond the three-point arc and 46 percent from the field to make quick work of Trine 79-46 Wednesday in the opening round of the MIAA Men’s basketball tournament. The host Knights scored the first basket of the game and held the lead the rest of the way. Calvin’s largest first-half lead was 25 points.
Three players scored in double-digits, including Randall Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Aiken) and Chris Mislan (Indianapolis/Roncalli), who led the Thunder (7-19, 3-11) with 12 points. Trine ends the season at 7-19, 3-11 in the MIAA. Calvin will face Olivet Friday night in the MIAA semi-final round.
Glenn Alfieri (Troy, Mich./Athens) led Trine with 19 points and seven rebounds. Chris
Mislan (Indianapolis/Roncalli) scored 14 as the Thunder dropped a 71-68 decision
Saturday in the MIAA. Trine shot 45 percent from the field (25-of-55), 70 percent
at the free-throw line (17-of-20) and 36 percent (7-of-19) of it’s three-point shots.
Hope outrebounded Trine 33-30.
Trine’s biggest lead of the first half was 9 points, but trailed for much of the second-half. Hope held a lead of nine points at 58-49 with 9:17 remaining in the second-half. Trine could pull no closer than three points, but had chances to cut it to two-points on three consecutive possessions in the final four minutes.
Trine (7-18, 3-11 MIAA) returns to action Wednesday versus Calvin in the first round of the MIAA conference tournament. Trine is the No. 8 seed, Calvin is number one. Action gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
Three Trine players scored in double-digits as the Thunder held of Kalamazoo 71-70 Wednesday in MIAA basketball.
Trine (7-17, 3-9 MIAA) got 15 points from Randall Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Aiken) while Glenn Alfieri (Troy, Mich./Athens ) scored 12 and Chris Mislan (Indianapolis/Roncali) had 11. Lamar Jackson had six points and 13 rebounds.
Trine jumped out to a 45-20 halftime lead and had to hold-off a 45-31 Kalamazoo rally in the second-half. Trine is back in action Saturday, in a 7:30 p.m. contest with Hope. ADRIAN, Mich. - Adrian took the lead on their first possession of the game and never
trailed in a 80-69 win over Trine Saturday in MIAA men’s basketball.
Riding 66 percent field-goal shooting, the Bulldogs built a 30-point lead, 50-20
with 3:02 left in the first-half. Trine could get no closer than 11 points in the second-half.
Trine (6-17, 2-9 MIAA) was paced by Wes Weir (Indianapolis/North Central) with
19 points. Glenn Alfieri (Troy, Mich./Athens) had 18 points and six rebounds. Randall Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Aiken) had 15 points and 7 rebounds.

Albion won the battle at the line and ultimately the game connecting on 26-of-37
free-throw attempts in a 73-67 effort Wednesday at Hershey Hall.
Randall Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Aiken) scored a season-high 24 for the Thunder.
Wes Weir (Indianapolis/North Central) scored 12 points. Lamar Jackson grabbed six rebounds.
The Thunder shot 51 percent from the field (27-of-53), 35 percent from three-point range (9-of-26) and attempted just seven free-throws, connecting on four for 57.1 percent. Albion hit 41.2 percent of its shots (21-of-51), 29 percent of its three-point goals (5-of-17) and 70 percent at the line.
The Britons held leads as large as seven points in the first half, Trine’s largest was 16-12 with about 9:00 left in the first half. Albion held a 10 point lead in the second half at 70-60 with :37 remaining. Trine largest lead was 45-43 with 11:01 left in the second half. Trine travels to Adrian Saturday. It’s pretty simple to tell the story of Trine’s 76-58 win over Alma Saturday at Hershey Hall. Call it bad timing for the Scots.
If there ever was a time to get cold, this wasn’t it. While the Scots struggled hitting just 19 percent (6-of-32) from the field, Trine caught fire connecting on 65 percent of its shots (15-of-23). For the Thunder, they rode the hot shooting to a 40-16 halftime lead.
Three Thunder players led the charge with double-digit points. Wes Weir (Indianapolis/North Central) scored 23 points. Randall Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Aiken) contributed 21 points. Glenn Alfieri (Troy, Mich./Athens) added 12 points and seven rebounds. Next up, the Thunder host Albion Wednesday in a 7:30 p.m. contest.

OLIVET, Mich. - Trine managed just 21 points and 29 percent field goal shooting and
didn't fare much better in the second-half in a 73-51 loss to Olivet Tuesday in MIAA
men's basketball. Lamar Jackson (Marion/Marion) scored 11 points and seven
rebounds to lead the Thunder. Glenn Alfieri added nine points.
ROYAL OAK, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Trine
University
guard Wes Weir its Player of the Week in men's basketball.
Weir, a junior from Indianapolis (North Central HS), had a sizzling outside shooting performance last week, scoring 49 points in two games. He hit five 3-point baskets in scoring 21 points in an 85-69 Trine loss to Hope, then sank an MIAA season-high eight triples in 10 attempts, scoring 28 points, as the Thunder nearly upset conference co-leader Calvin, falling to the Knights 82-80. For the week, Weir made 18-of-32 of shots from the field (56 percent) and 13-of-20 from 3-point range (65 percent). It's the first time he has been named MIAA Player of the Week in his career.

It took 40 minutes - a full 40 minutes for Calvin to beat Trine 82-80 Saturday at
Hershey Hall.
When the dust settled most of the fans in attendance had to do a
double-take the
scoreboard to make sure the game was over.
Trailing by as many as 11 points with seven minutes left in the game, the Thunder outscored Calvin 14-4 over the next 6:11. Wes Weir connected on a three-pointer to make it 72-71 with 1:20 to play. Trine could pull no closer than one point the rest of the way.
Calvin connected on four-of-four free-throw attempts in the final :33 seconds to preserve the win.
Weir (Indianapolis/North Central) led all players with 28 points. Deon Thompson (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) scored 15 points and had eight assists. Chris Mislan (Indianapolis/Roncalli) had 13 points.

The Thunder shot 46 percent from the field (27-58), 55 percent (12-22) beyond the arc and 70 percent (14-20) from the line. Calvin also shot 46 percent from the field (25-55). They connected on 32 percent (8-of-25) from three-point range and made 89 percent (24-of-27) from the free-throw line. Calvin out rebounded Trine 37-28 and had more points off of turnovers (17-9)

HOLLAND, Mich. - Hope took a 31-29 lead with 3:15 remaining in the first half and never trailed again in a 85-69 decision over Trine Wednesday. Trine could pull no closer than three points in the second half. A Chris Mislan jumper cut it to 45-42 with 15:02.
Trine’s biggest lead was six points early in the game, The Flying Dutchmen led by 16 points mid-way through the second-half.
Wes Weir led Trine (5-13, 1-6 MIAA) with 21 points. Chris Mislan had 14 points and five rebounds. Lamar Jackson had 10 points and four boards. Deon Thompson had added eight assists.
The Thunder shot at a 42 percent clip (26-of-62). 38 percent from three-point range (8-of-21) and 64 percent at the free-throw line. (9-of-14). Hope connected at 49 percent (31-of-63), 36 percent of its three-point shots (4-of-11) and 95 percent at the line (19-of-20). Hope controlled the paint, out-rebounding Trine 41-28 and scoring 16 second-chance points.Trine is back in action Saturday hosting Calvin at 3 p.m.

KALAMAZOO, Mich., - Down by as many as 13 points, Trine University hung onto beat Kalamazoo 74-69 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association basketball Saturday. The win snaps a five-game losing streak for the Thunder who hadn’t won since winning the Tournament of Fallen Heroes December 29 in Staten Island, N.Y.
The win is an early step in the right direction for a team that’s struggling to find itself. “It’s a good win on the road, especially after a debacle Wednesday” Trine Coach Rod Harmon said. “We didn’t play great, but we played hard.”
Wes Weir (Indianapolis/North Central) and Chris Mislan (Indianapolis/Roncalli) each scored 21 points for the Trine (5-12, 1-5 MIAA). Glenn Alfieri (Troy, Mich./Athens)pitched in with 13 points and 8 boards.
Following a dismal 79-53 loss to Adrian last week, the Thunder were put through a series of emotionally charged practices.
“I think the kids felt motivated after the last couple days of practice,” he said. “We didn’t play perfect, but we played together. We have to be consistent this week, if we don’t play well Wednesday (at Hope) it doesn’t mean anything. “
If they are consistent, anything can happen in the conference the Harmon said. ”We need to get some upsets and we need to go on a run, but I am not ruling it out. That has to be our goal. We can definitely be in a position to host . “
The MIAA post-season tournament is seeded based on regular season standings, the top four teams will host.
Trailing 50-38 with 14:47 remaining the Thunder went on a 21-6 run over the next eight minutes to take a 59-56 lead. Trine took the lead for good at 5:11 on a Weir three-pointer to make it 64-61 Kalamazoo made it 64-63 on the next possession - but could not pull any closer.
Trine shot 67 percent in the second half (14-of-21) and 50 percent for the game. The Thunder also dialed in 9-of-17 three pointers - 53 percent - for the game, 64 percent in the second half (7-of-11). The hot shooting also carried over to the free-throw line where Trine finished 19-of-27 for 70 percent.

When Trine hosts Calvin Saturday, January 31, coaches may not be making much of
a fashion statement, but they are definitely making a statement.
Rob Harmon and
the Thunder coaching staff will join MIAA and college coaches around the nation
in wearing suits and sneakers as part of the annual Coaches versus Cancer suits
and sneakers awareness campaign.. The game tips-off at 3 pm. The
athletics department has invited several cancer organizations to the game to highlight local efforts. Check back as more details are announced. Fans are encouraged to
wear sneakers to the games to show their support.

Adrian opened with a 14-4 spurt, en route to a 35-21 halftime lead and answered with a 44-32 second
half to defeat Trine 79-53 Wednesday at Hershey Hall.
The Bulldogs (6-9, 3-2) connected on 54 percent of the field (33-for-61) and 75 percent from the line (6-of-8) to power the win. The visitors also benefited from 13 Thunder turnovers in the first half. Adrian outrebounded Trine 30-25. Trine (4-12, 0-5) managed 44 percent field shooting (20-of-45) and 64 percent at the free throw line (9-of-14).
Thirteen Thunder players had playing time, 12 scored. Reid McNally (Williamston, Mich./Danville) paced Trine with 10 points. Lamar Jackson (Marion/Marion) had five rebounds. Trine is back in action Saturday at Kalamazoo in a 3pm start.

ALBION, Mich. - Trine (4-11, 0-4 MIAA) squandered a 16-point league in a
67-65 loss Saturday to Albion in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.
Trine was led by Deon Thompson (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) with 16 points and five rebounds. Wes Weir (Indianapolis/North Central) and Reid McNally (Williamston, Mich. /Danville) added 14 and 11 points each. Chris Mislan (Indianapolis/Roncalli) recorded nine points; Lamar Jackson, pictured above (Marion/Marion) tallied 13 rebounds and eight points. Glenn Alfieri (Troy, Mich./Athens) finished with seven.
Trine led Albion by 16 points when Deon Thompson hit a three-point shot to build the lead to 42-31. The Britons answered by going on an 11-3 run over the next 3:19 to cut it to 45-42 Thunder lead.
The Thunder built the lead to six points again at 56-50 lead with 5:55 to play. Albion then went on a 14-7 run to take its first lead of lead of the second half 64-63 at 1:08. The Britons would never trail again.
Albion (8-7, 2-2 MIAA) had its shooting struggles, hitting just 35 percent from the field and 58 percent at the free-throw line, but it made just enough shots - 24-of-68 field goals and 14-of-20 free-throws to edge the Thunder.
Trine shot 43 percent for the game (22-of-51) - including 11-of-20 in the second half for 55 percent. The Thunder was also effective at the free-throw line, hitting on 12-of-17 attempts for 71 percent and 9-of-18 three point attempts.

were accurate from three-point range, nailing 12-of-32 shots while struggling with 7-of-15 shooting at the free-throw line.
Calvin shot 38 percent from the field for the game, connecting on 26-of-68 shots.The Knights also converted 5-of-16 three-pointers and 20-of-30 free throws. Calvin was tough inside, out-rebounding Trine 52-36. Each team recorded 11 turnovers.

a 79-75 victory over Nazareth Sunday in the Tournament of
Fallen Heroes at the College of Staten Island.
Wes Weir scored 15 points - including four three pointers,

on 6-of-6 field goals and two of
two three-point shots to finish with 14 points. Randall
Harris had
11. Lamar Jackson added 10 points and 7 rebounds. The Thunder (3-7) hit 41 percent of its field goals and 13-of-21 at the free throw line.
Trine took lead for good when Deon Thompson scored on a layup with 3:08 to play
to make it 69-68. The victory snaps a seven game losing streak dating to mid-November.

INDIANAPOLIS - It’s the little things that make a big difference in a basketball game. Anderson combined all those details to beat Trine 69-52 in the wee hours of the morning Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse.Thunder hit 35 percent (21-of-60 percent) for the game, 33 percent beyond the arc (6-of-18). Trine continues to struggle at the line - hitting just 36 percent (4-of-11).
Anderson shot 38 percent (25-of-66) from the field, 28 percent (8-of-29) of its three-pointers and 79 percent at the free-throw line (11-14).
Anderson outrebounded Trine 45-40, while Trine committed 16 turnovers to 11 by the Ravens. Anderson also blocked five Trine shots.
Wes Weir scored 10 points to lead Trine, Lamar Jackson added nine points and 11 rebounds. Deon Thompson finished with eight points and seven rebounds. The Ravens got 14 points a each from Andrew Jones and Mike Russell.
Anderson and Trine didn’t get things started until 10:45 Friday as the Pacers and Los Angeles Clippers went double overtime, postponing the game by at least an hour. The game finally concluded just after 12:30 early Saturday morning.
Trine will hit the road to play in the Tournament of Fallen Heroes at Staten Island, New York opening against Nazareth Sunday afternoon. Monday, Trine faces St. Joseph’s College or the College of Staten Island in the consolation or championship round.
Trailing 53-41 with 12:25 to play, Trine went on a 20-10 run to pull to within 63-61, but Davenport finished with a 10-2 run to stall any Thunder threat, 73-64.
Glenn Alfieri (Troy, Mich./Athens) led the Thunder (2-6) with 18 points and eight rebounds. Wes Weir (Indianapolis/North Central) and Randall Harris (Cincinnati, OH/Aiken) added 15 and 11 points each. Neil Smith (Martinsville/Martinsville) also added eight rebounds.
Trine committed 21 turnovers in the loss.
James Nelson of Davenport (10-3) paced all scorers with 23 points. Mitch Vanderkam had 12 rebounds and 14 points for the Panthers.
For the game, Trine shot 34.5 percent from the field, 57.7 percent at the line and 32.4 percent from beyond the arc. Davenport ended with 40.4 percent field goal shooting, 71.4 at the at free-throw line and 25 percent of its three-point opportunities.
Trine returns to action Friday night against Anderson University. The game is at Conseco Fieldhouse, and will begin following the NBA L.A. Clippers-Indiana game starting at approximately 9:30p.m. Tickets are still available [click here] for more information.
LIMA, Ohio -Trine dropped to 2-5 on the season with a 75-48 losing effort at Northwestern Ohio.
Wes Weir (Indianapolis/North Central) and Lamar Jackson (Marion/Marion) led Trine with nine points. Jackson grabbed 11 rebounds. Northwestern jumped out to a 38-23 halftime lead and built their lead with a 37-25 spurt in the second half. Trine shot just 30 percent for the game while the host Racers shot 44 percent. The Thunder host Davenport Saturday at 3 p.m.
Nick Williams and Roshawn Russell combined to score 59 points as North Park ousted Indiana University-Northwest 95-80 Saturday night in the championship of the Trine University/Ramada Inn Shootout.
Williams finished with 52 points and 14 rebounds for the tournament. Trailing 42-38 at halftime, the Vikings went on a tear hitting 66 percent of their field goals to outscore the RedHawks 57-38 to post the victory.
The RedHawks had four players in double-digits, Joe Ramsey (18), Pete Trogovich (17), Jesse Howell (15) and Pete Dunbar (14)
In the consolation game, the hard-luck continues for Trine. The Thunder have now lost three straight… including the last two in the final minute of the contest. The lastest a 77-73 lost to Case Western.
Wes Weir scored 13 points in the loss. Weir finished with 35 points for the two-day affair to earn all-tournament team honors. Chris Mislan had 14 and Randall Harris added 12.
The Thunder (2-4) return to action Wednesday in Lima, Ohio against the University of Northwestern Ohio.

The name "shootout" was fitting Friday in the opening night of Ramada Inn Shootout at Hershey Hall. All four teams had hot hands and very little trouble scoring in an exciting opening night of action.
North Park shot a 61 percent to beat Case Western Reserve 84-69.. The Vikings got 26 points and seven rebounds from Nick Williams. Clayton Cahill scored 19 points and had five boards to secure the victory.
Trine got 22 points and five three-pointers from Wes Weir, but IU-Northwest stood strong in the final moments to outlast the Thunder 87-84 in the nightcap. The RedHawks were led by Joe Ramey who poured in 27 points and Pete Dunbar who managed 21 points and 12 rebounds. Dunbar was nearly unstoppable inside hitting on 10-of-12 field goals.
For the second game in a row, the Thunder struggled at the free-throw line hitting just 60 percent (18-of-30). Trine hit nearly 48 percent for the night. IU-Northwest hit 50 percent of its field goals.
In Saturday games, Trine will face Case Western Reserve in the consolation game at 3 p.m., North Park and IU-Northwest will contend for the championship at 5 p.m.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Trine shooters managed just 39 percent from the field (20-of-51) Tuesday against former NAIA rival Concordia. Despite shooting only 32 percent in the first half, Trine held tight 27-25 at the break, but was outscored 44-36 in the final half to drop to 2-2. The shooting issues continued at the line, where the Thunder hit just 41 percent (7-of-17) from the free-throw line.
Wes Weir led Trine with 16 points. Glenn Alfieri scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Clayton Napier also chipped in with 13 points.
Concordia improves to 6-3. Trine returns to Hershey Hall for the Ramada Inn Shoot-Out Friday and Saturday.
BLUFFTON, Ohio - Andre Patrick and Randall Harris scored 11 points and 10 points each in a 88-52 loss to Bluffton College Tuesday in Men's Division III college basketball Tuesday. Trine struggled early hitting just 28 percent of its shots, falling behind 42-20 at the half and could not recover in the second half - being outscored by the Beavers 47-32. Trine is now 2-1, Bluffton is also 2-1.
FRANKLIN - Hot shooting and balanced scoring was the order of the night Tuesday, as Trine defeated highly-touted Franklin 73-68.
The Thunder seemlying couldn't miss hitting on 65 percent of their shots (20-of-29 ) in the first half and 67 percent (11-of-17) in the second to power the win over the Grizzlies, a team that was getting recognition in national polls.
Four players scored in double digits including Glenn Alfieri who scored 15 points. Andre Patrick, Randall Harris and Deon Thompson added 14, 13 and 11 points for Trine.
