Trine University Men's Golf
Hershey, Pa. - Three Trine golfers were honored by the Golf Coaches of America (GCAA), the organization announced Tuesday.
Andy Wolf (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee) was named to the Division III PING All-Great Lakes Region team. Wolf was among 12 golfers from this region.
Only one other golfer from the MIAA was honored. Jon Kuiper of Calvin.
Seventy-two golfers overall were named to the All-Region teams featuring players from six regions. (Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Great Lakes, Central and West.)
Terence Clingaman (Stryker, Ohio/Stryker) and Alex Lorencz (Chesaning, Mich./Chesaning Union) were also honored as Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars. Steven Strock of Hope was the only other MIAA golfer recognized. Thirty-eight D-III golfers were named All-America Scholars nationally.
To be eligible as an All-America Scholar golfer, an individual must be a junior or senior academically and compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70-percent of his team’s competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 79.0 in Division III and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
For the fourth straight tournament, a Trine golfer has claimed medalist honors. Saturday, Todd Wisler (Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) shot a 72 to take first place at the Bill Gettig Invitational.
The Thunder also won first place as a team scoring 382. Huntington was second at 386. Calvin (394) and Indiana Tech (407) rounded out the team scoring. Ancillia shot 344, as an incomplete team with just four players.
Andy Wolf (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee) was tied for second with 74. Mike Morgan (Hillsboro, Ohio/Hillsboro)
was fourth with 74. Fourteen Trine golfers shot in the 70's.
Trine golfers remain hot on the links. Wednesday the Thunder took the top three individual spots and bested second-place Olivet by 19 strokes to win the A.C. Eddy Invitational at Zollner Golf Course.
Trine finished first at 287 followed by Olivet at 306. Rochester (309), Albion (313), Glen Oaks (320) and Hope (321) rounded out the scoring.
Andy Wolf (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee) shot a 69 to lead all participants, including teammates Alex Lorencz (Chesaning, Mich./Chesaning Union) and Jason Paff (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) who followed close behind with 70 and 71 respectively.
It's the third time in less than a week a Trine golfer has taken medalist at an event. Sunday Wolf took first place at Ohio Wesleyan's Lamkin Strimer Memorial Invitational shooting 142 for the two-day event. Lorencz was also second shooting 151.
Also last weekend, Jared Lambert (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) won the Defiance College Spring Invitational shooting 147 Saturday and Sunday.
Thunder Coach Bill SanGiacomo said his seniors (Wolf and Lorencz) are looking to make the most of their remaining college careers. “Seniors go one of two ways, they fade out or they go out in a blaze of glory, and our two are blazing.”
Jason Paff is also securing a spot on the varsity card. “He’s grown up and is very reliable, consistent and is confident in the game," SanGiacomo explained.
The rest of the Thunder golfers weren’t shabby either. Eleven of the Trine golfers entered in the invitational scored in the 70s.
“I don’t know any team in Indiana or the Midwest that is as deep as us and the scores are showing that today," SanGiacomo boasted.

Holland, Mich. -
Andy Wolf (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee) shot a 69 to finish one stroke of ahead of Hope’s Steven Strock to win the Hope Jamboree Wednesday.
As a team, the Thunder finished sixth strokes off the pace at 297, to tie Hope for second place. Trine's late season push netted a second place finish overall in the conference. Albion, Calvin also finished season in the MIAA.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., - Andy Wolf (Wawasee, Ind./Syracuse) finished with a two-under par 70,
to set
a new course record and claim first-place at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Calvin Monday at the Watermark
Country Club. The Thunder finished third, shooting 307. Calvin was first at 294, Hope a distance second with 306.
HOLLAND, Mich. - MIAA officials announced today that Monday's MIAA Jamboree at Wausekewon Country Club will resume Monday, October 12. Inclement weather forced the suspension of play at the MIAA Jamboree at Wausekewon Country Club.
ANGOLA, Ind. - Coach Bill SanGiacomo issued a sternly worded message this past week. He reminded the team, they had the potential to win the conference, but he would make personnel adjustments if things didn't change.
"It's about time," the long-time coach said. "I know we have a home-course advantage, but I really believe they have the talent to play like this consistently."
All five golfers finished within four strokes or less of of the leaders. More details to come.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Trine senior Alex Lorencz (Chesaning, Mich./Chesaning Union)
fired a two-under par 70, to win the MIAA Jamboree Thursday at Milham Golf Course
in Kalamazoo. The Thunder finished in a tie for fifth place shooting 302. Hope won the
event shooting 293.
DEFIANCE, Ohio - Trine shot 303 to finish third at the Jon Spiess Memorial Tournament. Rochester and the University of Northwest Ohio tied for first 299. Technical difficulty at the course have delayed posting of full results from Tuesday's 2009 men's Jon Spiess Memorial golf tournament are not currently available. ALMA, Mich. - Patrick Bailey shot a 72 to finish third, while Trine shot a 304 to finish fourth as a team in the Alma MIAA Jamboree Saturday at Pine River Golf Course. Andy Wolf (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee) shot 75 to finish in a tie for fifth place.
Just six strokes separated the top four teams. Hope topped the event with a 10 over-par 298, Adrian (301) and Calvin (302) rounded out the top three.
Albion (312), Olivet (312), Alma (322) and Kalamazoo (329) rounded out the final eight slots.
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Trine golfers improved to finish in second place of the Lou Collins
Memorial Classic Saturday at Bedford Valley Golf Club.
"I'm pleased with the way our guys responded Saturday. This is a very good team and they showed they can compete with the best in the conference," Thunder golf coach Bill SanGiacomo said. "We need to be competitive every day, but I really think is a very, very good team."
The Thunder finished with a two-day total of 612, and tied Hope for the seventh spot in the event. Indiana Wesleyan was first with a 580. Madonna was second at 583, followed by Olivet in third at 607.
Trine trimmed eight strokes off its score Saturday to finish with a second day total of 302 - besting all its MIAA opponents. Albion shot 305; Hope 307, Olivet 307, Calvin #1 310, Adrian 312, Olivet #2 327.
