7.01 Lang to lead Thunder men's lacrosse

Trine University has named Vinnie Lang Head men’s lacrosse coach, the University announced today. Lang will take the reins of the third-year program immediately.

Lang comes to Trine after leading the Gilmour Academy lacrosse program in suburban Cleveland. Before leading Gilmour, Lang coached collegiately at Mercyhurst,
Wittenberg and Dayton, building an all-time record of 64-68.

Lang was also an assistant strength and conditioning coach, working with athletes
in all intercollegiate sports at Purdue University.

“Coach Lang is enthusiastic and demonstrates a personal and professional energy and work ethic that we believe characterizes Thunder athletics,” athletic director Jeff Posendek
said. “He has an impressive track record of leadership, discipline and success as a player, coach and as a person.”

Lang’s vision for Trine extends beyond wins and losses.

“I want to help make better lacrosse players and better people who will be prepared for success on and off the field and have some fun along the way,” Lang said. “Lacrosse is a special game. I want my guys to play with pride, win with integrity, and lose with honor. Most importantly, work hard, have fun and enjoy the ride.”

As a player at SUNY-Oswego and Purdue, Lang was consistently an all-conference player. He also played for the German National team for several seasons, including at the 1998 World Games and the 2001 European Championship.

Lang’s 1999 Mercyhurst squad finished 10th in NCAA Division II. At Dayton, the Flyers finished 13-1 in 2007 and advanced to the national semi-finals. He was named CCLA South Coach of the Year. Most recently he was the head lacrosse coach and physical fitness program director at Gilmour Academy.

He is a frequent instructor at camps and clinics nationwide, including at Notre Dame, Syracuse, the Unites States Naval Academy and Michigan.

Lang holds a bachelor’s degree in movement and sports science and a master’s in exercise physiology. He also served in the United States Marine Corps for 12 years and reached the rank of sergeant.He spent six months in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait serving in the first Gulf War.

Lang has a wife, Tere, and two sons, Nikko and Cole.

4.24 - Bulldogs stop Trine in season finale
Adrian jumped out to a 5-0 lead midway through the first quarter and would never trail in a 19-15 decision against the Thunder Saturday at Shive Field.

Trine tied it up at 8-8 with a goal by Andy Lauer (Fisher, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern)  with 8:35 to play in the second quarter, but failed to grab the lead. In the second half, Trine pulled to within two goals at 14-12 with 4:07 left in the third quarter.

Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) scored five goals and added three assists for Trine. J.J. Griesinger (Apple Valley, Minn/Holy Angels) had four assists and goal. Sean Hitz (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) had three goals.

Trine fired 43 shots, Adrian 38.  Jeff Dombeck (St. Louis/CBC) stopped six shots in goal.

4.23 - Thunder stumble against Presidents
CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio
- Washington and Jefferson was the last man standing in a wild, Wednesday night 16-14 win over Trine in college lacrosse.

The game was a show of offensive firepower and aggression, as both  teams combined for 24 penalties and 72 shots.  (Trine 38 shots, 26 shots on goal and 11 penalties. W&J 41 shots, 27 on goal, and 13 penalties.) The lead also changed four times.

Falling behind 5-1 in the first quarter, the Thunder (6-8) stormed back to take 6-5 lead with 2:53 to play in the second quarter. Trine got started quickly in the second-half firing netting goals in less than five minutes to take an 11-7 lead at 8:38 in the third quarter.

The Presidents (7-4) then went on a 6-1 run to take control at 13-12 at 9:48 in the fourth quarter.  Washington and Jefferson finished things off by outscoring the Thunder 3-2 to grab the win.

Jeff Dombek (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) finished with 11 saves.  Trine recorded 27 ground balls. Dan Giorgis (Avon, Ohio/St. Edwards) and J.J. Griesinger (Apple Valley, Minn./Holy Angels) each scored three goals. Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) had two goals and an assist. Trine returns to action Saturday at Shive Field hosting Adrian in the season finale at 1 p.m.

4.16 - Thunder win in Arkansas
CONWAY, Ark.  - Trine jumped back on the winning track overpowering Hendrix 20-4 Friday night in college men’s lacrosse.  The Thunder took control early cruising to a 14-0 lead late into the second quarter.  Trine (6-7) launched 57 shots, 20 on goal. Hendrix fired 29 shots.

Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) scored six goals and contributed three assists. J.J. Griesinger (Apple Valley, Minn./Holy Angels) scored three times. Andy Lauer (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) found the net twice. In goal for Trine, Jeff Dombek (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) stopped 14 shots.

4.15 - Tigers stop Thunder streak
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Wittenberg snapped Trine’s five game winning streak in a convincing 12-2 win Wednesday. The Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead late in the first quarter and never trailed. 

Trine’s only scoring came in the second quarter. Blaine Stahley (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) scored on a pass from Andy Lauer (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) put Trine (5-7) on the board with 10:32 to play in the second quarter to make it 5-1. Stahley would dish off to Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) who scored at 5:33 in the second to quarter to make it 6-2.

Wittenberg (7-3) started the third quarter scoring four goals in the first five minutes to put the the game on ice. Wittenberg fired off 50 shots on goal, compared to 25 for the Thunder.

Jeff Dombek (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) stopped 10 shots for the Thunder.  Dombek would also tally six ground balls.

4.15 - Wittenberg, Trine to clash under the lights
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The surging Thunder (5-6) will face a tough test Wednesday as it hooks up with Wittenberg (6-3) Wednesday night at 7 p.m.. 4.11 - Trine continues its winning ways
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The beat goes on for Trine men’s lacrosse. The second-year program notched its fifth-straight win Saturday besting Fontbonne 11-4. Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) and Sean Hitz (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) led a balanced Thunder attack with two goals and an assist.  JJ Griesinger had three assists and a goal. All told, nine players scored for Trine.   Goalkeeper Jeff Dombek (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) recorded 19 saves.

Trine took a 2-0 lead to start the second period and built a 5-1 halftime lead.  Fontbonne made it 5-2 with 10:25 to play in the third quarter, but could get no closer. The Thunder return to action at Wittenberg Wednesday night at 7p.m.

As a team, Trine fired 49 shots, recovered 25 ground balls, forced 28 turnovers, tallied 11 clears and won 19 face-offs. Fontbonne had 34 shots, 25 ground balls, won 19 face-offs, and cleared 17 times.

3.28 M-Lax grabs second win
Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) found the net six times, and J.J. Griesinger (Apple Valley, Minn./Holy Angels) added three goals as seven players scored in an 18-8 rout of Carthage Saturday at Shive Field. Jeff Dombek (St. Louis, Mo.) stopped eight shots. It’s the second-straight win for Trine (2-7). Carthage dropped to (1-3).

Carthage tied it at 4-4 with 12:35 remaining in the second quarter on a goal by Keegan Bowman. Trine responded reeling off four-unanswered goals to take a 8-4 halftime lead.

It was a show of offensive muscle for the Thunder, once the dust settled Trine fired 57 shots – 30 on goal. The Thunder also compiled 39 ground balls, won 15-of-24 faceoffs and recorded 21 clears.

Carthage had 27 shots, 16 on goal, and 18 ground balls. Trine returns to action Friday at Birmingham-Southern and Saturday versus Sewanee University.

3.21M-Lax blast Medaille 22-5
The Thunder scored early and scored often in 22-5 rout off Medaille Saturday at Shive Field. It's the first win of the season for Trine (1-6). Medaille (0-4) remains winless on the season.

Eight players found the net, J.J. Griesenger (Apple Valley, Minn./Holy Angels) scored five goals, Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake)had four goals and six assists.
Trine is back in action Saturday, hosting Carthage at 3 p.m.

3.15 - Thunder outshoot Bearcats in home-opener
Trine had its offensive opportunities, but the Thunder couldn’t find the net nearly enough in 16-11 loss Sunday to St. Vincent (2-3). In the loss, Trine (0-5) outshot the Bearcats 46-41, won 27 of 47 ground balls, forced 31 turnovers while committing 27 and played even (30-30) in face-offs.

Logan Nickel (Houston, Texas/Durango) gave the Thunder the lead early, albeit briefly, on a pass from Cory Childs (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) 4:20 into the first quarter. The Bearcats would then score three goals in just over four minutes to take a commanding 3-1 lead. The Bearcats took a 6-4 lead at the end of the first quarter. Thunder could pull no closer than two the rest of the way, as St. Vincent built a seven goal cushion twice.

Blaine Stahley (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) sparked the Thunder with four goals. Childs added three scores and two assists. Dan Giorgis (Avon, Ohio/St. Edwards) pitched in with a pair of goals. In addition to Nickel’s early goal, Sean Hitz (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) also a recorded goall. Goalkeeper Jeff Dombek (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) stopped eight shots on goal. Trine returns to action Wednesday at Kenyon in a 4 p.m. start.

2.23 - No. 15 Denison blasts Trine 22-1
GRANVILLE, Ohio - Trine  suffered a 22-1 loss to No. 15 Denison in the season opener Monday.  J.J. Greisinger (Apple Valley, Minn./Holy Angels) scored the lone Thunder goal on an assist from Jeremy Sherman at the 8:09 mark of the first quarter.  Denison outshot Trine 48-14.  Jeff Dombek stopped 9 shots.
