2008 Outlook
The 2008 Trine University men’s soccer team will balance a core group of experienced returners with a strong recruiting class to build the program into a conference contender. The Thunder return several starters from last year’s team and will rely upon key newcomers to step in and be ready to contribute.

ROYAL OAK, Mich., - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Trine University forward Sean Sullivan, Olivet College forward Phillip Glaub and Hope College midfielder Ausable Schwiebert its Players of the Week in men’s soccer.
Co-Offensive Players of the Week
Sullivan, a freshman from Brighton, Mich., (Brighton HS), came off the bench to score two goals as the Thunder split their final two games of the season. He scored Trine’s only goal in a 2-1 loss to Kalamazoo, then scored the winning goal in overtime as the Thunder upset Calvin, 2-1, ending the Knights’ 26-game MIAA unbeaten streak.
Glaub, a freshman from Okemos, Mich., (Okemos HS), scored the first three goals of his career in leading the Comets to a pair of season-ending victories. He scored two goals in a 4-0 win over Alma and the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Kalamazoo.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For the second time in less than a month, the men’s soccer team played the role of “giant killer.” Saturday, in their season finale, the Thunder held off No. 18th ranked Calvin 2-1 in overtime. Despite firing off just six shots in the contest , two found the mark. Calvin launched 20 shots but could only connect on one for a goal. Trine (9-10-1, 7-6-1 MIAA) got goals from Rudy Cantrell (Justin, Texas/Northwest) and Sean Sullivan (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) to post the victory. Cantrell’s goal came in the first minute to give Trine the 1-0 lead. Sullivan scored in the 91th minute - overtime - off a deflected header to give Trine the 2-1 win. Cory Sarason made six saves in 55 minutes of play. Ricky Witte had one save. October 25, the Thunder bested then league-leading Hope 2-1.
Kalamazoo defeated Trine 2-1 Wednesday afternoon in MIAA play. The Hornets trailed at the end of the first half, but scored on a pair of second half goals to grab the win. Sean Sullivan (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) scored Trine’s only goal in the ninth minute off a Ryan Brennell (St. Louis, Mo./Desmet Jed) pass. Brennell dribbled toward the end line then passed to the far post as Sullivan outran his defender to tap the ball in. The Thunder (8-10-1, 6-6-1) will finish the regular season off on Saturday as they travel to Calvin to take on the only undefeated team in the MIAA.
Kevin Wajert (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) saved his best for last as Trine (8-9-1, 6-5-1) edged Adrian 2-1 Saturday in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play. Saturday was senior day for the Thunder and the senior added punctuation to an already stellar career. In the 87th minute, Wajert took a Rudy Cantrell (Justin, Texas/Northwest) pass and navigated through the defense to drill a 10 yard shot past the diving goaltender, giving Trine the lead for good. ALMA, Mich.- Trine and Alma battled to a 1-1 2 Overtime tie Tuesday in MIAA soccer. Kramer Pursell (Carmel/Westfield) got Trine’s only goal in the second half. The goaltending duo of Ricky Witte (Ossian/Norwell) and Cory Sarason (Elkhart/Concord) tallied 8 saves (Witte 5, Sarason 3). The Thunder outshot Alma 17-10, both squads fired nine shots on goal.
ROYAL OAK, Michigan- The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Trine University striker Kramer Pursell as its Offensive Player of the Week, and defenders Kurt Dosson of Albion College and Greg Snapper of Calvin College as its co-Defensive Players of the Week in men’s soccer.
Pursell, a freshman from Carmel, Ind. (Westfield HS), scored the winning goal and added an assist as the Thunder upset Hope 2-1 Saturday in a key MIAA match. It’s the second time Pursell has been named Offensive Player of the Week this season.[view]
MIke Ferrell had been waiting for a little luck to head to Trine. Saturday, the Thunder Head Coach got it in a 2-1 upset of MIAA-leading hope.
After surrendering an early goal off a direct kick, the Thunder countered by scoring off of a diving header. In the 33rd minute, Kramer Pursell (Carmel/Westfield) crossed the ball into the box and Dustin Minard (Peru/Maconaquah) dove and directed the ball into the side netting.
In the 80th minute, Trine was awarded a direct kick 25 yards out. Pursell kicked the ball and it curved to the side netting, just over the keeper’s head. Within the last two minutes of the game, freshman Cory Sarason (Elkhart/Concord) had three big saves, including two diving stops. There were 42 fouls committed including a yellow card and a red card handed out.
The Thunder (7-9, 5-5) travels to Alma on Tuesday. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00 pm.

Trine dropped a 1-0 heart-breaker to Albion Wednesday in MIAA soccer play. In the 54th minute Albion was awarded a penalty kick and capitalized, placing the ball in the bottom right corner pass the diving Ricky Witte (Ossian/Norwell). Trine could not capitalize on any of their scoring opportunities, hitting the post three times and outshooting Albion 18-8. The Thunder (6-9, 4-5) will host Hope on Saturday at 2 p.m.
OLIVET, Mich. - Freshman Conner Loftis (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair scored Trine’s only goal, in a 2-1 loss Saturday in MIAA soccer. Loftis got the scoring started in the 15th minute on an assist from Kevin Wajert (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) to give the Thunder the early 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Olivet drew even on a penalty kick by Mike May in the 17th. Graham Lockwood of Olivet scored the game winner at 54:31.
Trine fired off 17 shots, while Olivet launched 18, With Ricky Witte and Cory Sarason in the goal, Trine stopped 11 shots. Four by Witte, six by Sarason. Ethan Felsing of Olivet made 8 saves.
Wajert had four shots and an assist. Loftis finished with four shots and a goal. Trine hosts Albion Wednesday in MIAA play.
Trine stood strong defensively but lost 1-0 to Calvin College Tuesday in MIAA soccer. With both teams scoreless after the first half, the Knights found the net in the 81st minute. With three minutes to play, the Thunder had an opportunity to tie the game but couldn't convert. That's when Calvin goalkeeper Darrin Kline dove to his right to stop a Rudy Cantrell (Justin, TX/Visita Ridge) penalty kick. Senior goalkeeper Ricky Witte (Ossian/Norwell) had 5 saves for Trine.
Trine (6-7, 4-3 MIAA) travels to Olivet on Saturday.
Trine outshot Kalamazoo, but the Hornets had more accurate shots in a 3-1 win Saturday in MIAA play. Conner Loftis gave the Thunder an early lead at 1-0 in the first minute, but Kalamazoo netted shots in the 15th, 71st and 78th minute to grab the victory. Trine outshot Kalamazoo 12-11.
Trine now 6-6, 4-2 hosts league-leading Calvin Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The Men’s soccer team improved to 5-5 overal, 3-1 in the MIAA Saturday with a 2-0 win over Alma in Angola. The Thunder took the lead early with goals by Ryan Brennell (So., St. Louis/Desmet Jesuit) and Connor Loftis (Fr., St. Claire, Michigan/St. Claire). Brennell’s shot at 25:25 gave Trine the early 1-0 lead. Less then five minutes later, Loftis shot made it 2-0. Trine is at Adrian Wednesday.
HOLLAND, Mich.- Kramer Pursell (Carmel/Westfield) scored a pair of unassisted goals, but the Flying Dutchmen got timely goals to defeat the Thunder 3-2 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association soccer action Tuesday afternoon. [view more]

09.17 - Trine wins second straight
Trine University men's soccer team won its second straight Wednesday defeating Defiance College 6-0. The Thunder took a 3-0 lead in the first twenty minutes and cruised to the victory. [view more]

The Trine University men’s soccer team hosted the Ralph Ketner Classic this weekend, welcoming in Wittenberg University, Hanover College and Elmhurst College.
In the second day of the Glenn Hyundai College Showcase, the Trine University men’s soccer team fell to the Centre College Colonels. Battling back and forth, neither team could find the back of the net in the ninety-minute regulation, forcing overtime.
The Thunder men’s soccer team dropped their season opener this afternoon to the Transylvania University Pioneers, 3-1, as they traveled down to Lexington, Kentucky to take part in the 2-day Hyundai College Soccer Showcase. [view more]
