Tom Barnes is in his second season at the helm of the Thunder and is the sixth head women’s basketball coach in the history of program. Coach Barnes arrives at Trine after spending the 2006-07 season as the head women’s basketball coach at Kishwaukee Community College in Malta, Ill.

Barnes has an extensive basketball background, with 16 years of experience at either the community college level or NCAA Division III. Prior to coaching at Kishwaukee, he spent six years at Defiance College, where he accumulated an overall record of 103-56. The highlight of his years at Defiance occurred in 2001, when the team went 23-5 and captured the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and tournament championship.

Barnes coached at the community college level at Ellsworth Community College, Southwestern Michigan College, Kellogg Community College, Dodge City Community College, and Kishwaukee Community College. He amassed an overall record of 237-81 at the community college level over 11 years. His 1994 Southwestern Michigan team captured a national championship with a record of 29-6. 

Coach Barnes received his bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in driver’s education from North Dakota State University.
