2009-10 Outlook
Four starters return and promising freshmen provide a cautious but positive forecast for the Lady Thunder basketball in 2009-10. In 2008-09 the Thunder finished in a tie for third place in the MIAA, finished 12-13 (9-7 MIAA) and hosted their first-ever MIAA post-season tournament.
As any veteran coach will attest, lots can happen to plans laid on paper. A cautiously optimistic head coach Tom Barnes says success hinges on a couple factors. [more]
ADRIAN, Mich. - Adrian outscored Trine 48-21 in the second half en route to a 68-58 win Saturday in women’s basketball.
With the loss the Lady Thunder drop to 11-11, 6-7 in the MIAA. Trine was paced by Kristen Julian with 21 points. Jennifer Wall (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) added 10. Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonica) scored 8.
Trine converted 46 percent of its field goals (21-of-46), 17 percent of its three-point shots (1-of-6) and 58 percent of its free-throw shots. (15-of-26)
The Bulldogs ignited a 17-3 run to take a 53-40 lead with to 7:32 play. The Lady Thunder cut the lead to 60-53 with 1:28 remaining, but could pull no closer.
Kristen Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) scored 21 points and grabbed four rebounds as Trine blasted Olivet 60-38 Wednesday at Hershey Hall.
The win keeps Trine (11-10, 6-6 MIAA) in range for fourth place in the conference standings and with it a first-round home game. Leading 24-19 at halftime, Trine outscored the Comets 36-19 in the second half.
Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonica) added nine points for the Thunder. Liz Gehrig (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) had four assists. The Thunder shot 44 percent from the field (20-of-45), 38 percent of its three-point attempts (3-of-8) and 65 percent at the free-throw line (17-of-26).
The Lady Thunder travel to Adrian Saturay in a 1 p.m. contest.
Kristen Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) scored 19 points to power Trine to a 54-36 win over Albion Saturday. The Lady Thunder improved to 10-10, 5-6 in the MIAA. Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonica) had 11 rebounds and eight points in the win. Senf also recorded four assists.
The Lady Thunder shot 35 percent from the field (19-of-53), 20 percent from three-point range (2-of-10) and 64 percent at the free-throw line (14-of-22).
Trine jumped out to a 6-0 lead early and built a 16-point lead with less than six minutes remaining in the first half to cruise to the win. Late in the contest, the Lady Thunder led by as many as 24 points.
Next up for the Lady Thunder, they’ll host Olivet at Hershey Hall Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Holland, Mich. - Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonica) scored 14 points and yanked down 10 rebounds as the Lady Thunder dropped a 56-30 decision to fourth-ranked Hope Tuesday in MIAA women’s basketball. Jennifer Wall (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) added six rebounds.
Trine (9-10, 4-6 MIAA) shot 23 percent from the field for the game (12-of-53) and failed to connect from three-point range (0-of-14). The Lady Thunder hit 46 percent of its free-throws (6-of-13).
Hope took the lead 20 seconds in to the game and built a 32-12 lead at the half.
The Lady Thunder welcomes Albion (8-10, 4-6 MIAA) to Hershey Hall Saturday for a 1 p.m. It’s a key conference game for Trine. Both teams currently are tied for fourth-place in the conference. Saint Mary’s, Olivet and Adrian sit in third place with 5-5 records. The top four teams host first round MIAA tournament games.
Trine evened its record to 9-9 overall with a 62-57 win over Saint Mary’s Saturday. With the victory, the Lady Thunder also improved to 4-5 in the MIAA.
Jennifer Wall (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) led the home effort with 15 points and five rebounds. Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonia) scored 14 with four rebounds. Liz Gehrig (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) chipped in with 13. Kristen Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) added nine points and seven rebounds.
For the game, the Lady Thunder shot 43 percent from the field (20-of-47), including 39 percent from three-point range (5-of-13), and went 61 percent from the free-throw line (17-of-28).
Trine enjoyed its biggest lead of 12 points with about 15:22 to play. Saint Mary’s tied it at 46-46 with 8:22 remaining in the game. The Belles took a 56-55 lead with 2:09 to play.
Trine doused any Belle comeback as Kelly Costello (Muncie, Ind./Delta) hit a three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining to give the Lady Thunder a 58-56 lead. Trine put the game on ice by hitting four straight free throws.
The Lady Thunder is back in action Wednesday night at Hope.
Kristen Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) scored 15 points and Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonica) added 10 points and 10 rebounds as Trine beat Kalamazoo 49-40 Thursday.
.Kelly Costello (Muncie, Ind./Delta) and Liz Gehrig (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) scored seven points for the Lady Thunder.
The Lady Thunder shot 36 percent from the field (18-of-50), 21 percent from three-point range (3-of-14), and 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from the free-throw line.The Lady Thunder improves to 8-9, 4-5 in the MIAA.
Olivet, Mich. - Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonica) hit a free-throw with 3:47 to play to give Trine a 43-42 lead late in the second half, but that lead quickly faded. The host Comets answered with a 10-0 run to hand the Lady Thunder a 53-43 loss Wednesday.
Liz Gehrig (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) scored 13 to lead the Thunder. Kristen Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists, both team highs. Senf finished with 10 points.
Trine (7-9) shot 34 percent (15-of-44) for the game while hitting 44 percent (7-of-16) at the free-throw line and 40 percent (6-of-15) from three-point range..
The Lady Thunder host Kalamazoo Thursday at Hershey Hall. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
ALMA, Mich. - Freshman Haley Killingbeck (Poneto, Ind./Southern Wells) made a steal in the final five seconds, drew a foul and promptly hit a pair of free-throws to preserve a 62-59 Trine win over Alma Saturday in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women’s play.
Three players finished in double-digit points. Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonica) and Kristin Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) each scored 13 points. Kelly Costello (Muncie, Ind./Delta) added 11 points and eight boards.
Trailing by as many as fourteen points in the first half, the Lady Thunder (7-8, 2-4) outscored the Scots 39-24 in the second half to notch the win.
The victory snapped a two game losing streak.
Visiting Calvin wasted little time taking control early in a 58-40 win over the Trine Saturday in women’s basketball.
The Knights scored the game's opening basket and never trailed. Calvin built a 26 point lead in the second half.
After injuries sidelined four starters, freshmen made important contributions. Taylor Terry (Stroh, Ind./Prairie Heights) scored 14 points, while Katelyn Kaminski scored 10 for the Thunder. Sydney Spragg (Reading, Mich./Reading) added six points and seven rebounds.
The Lady Thunder are back in action Saturday at Alma.
Shooting woes continued for Trine Wednesday in a 52-47 loss to Adrian.
Trine - now 6-7, 1-3 - hit just 33.3 percent (16-of-48) from the field for the game, 68 percent (11-of-16) at the free-throw line and 50 percent from three-point range (4-of-8).
Adrian fared slightly better hitting 34.9 percent (15-of-43) of its field goals, 10 percent (1-of-10) from beyond the arc and 75 percent (18-of-23) of its free-throws.

Adrian out-rebounded Trine 32-31. Trine committed 23 turnovers, Adrian 22.
Trine led 15-13 at the break before Adrian outscored the Lady Thunder 39-32 in the final half. The Bulldogs took the lead at 9:59 to play in the second half to make it 32-30. Adrian followed with a 7-0 run over the next 1:36 to build their lead to 37-30.
Trine could pull no closer than three points with 2:12 to play. Freshman Taylor Terry (Stroh, Ind./Prairie Heights) hit a three pointer to make it 44-41. Adrian hit eight of their final 10 free throws to finish off the Lady Thunder.
Three Lady Thunder players scored in double-digits as Trine evened its record to 6-6 on the season beating the College of Wooster 52-50 Saturday.
Kelly Costello (Muncie, Ind./Delta) led the Lady Thunder scoring 14 points. Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wisc./Pecatonica) scored 10 points with nine rebounds. Jennifer Wall (New Haven) added 10 points and five rebounds.
Trine struggled, hitting just 33 percent of its shots (19-of-57), but out-rebounded the Fighting Scots 37-26 and converted 14-of-26 free-throws to post the win.
After taking a seven point lead at halftime, Wooster connected on 45 percent of its shots to outscore Trine 32-27 in the second half. Despite the hot shooting, Wooster was only able to take the lead briefly, 50-48, with 2:00 to play in the game.
Liz Gehrig (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) connected on a short-jumper to tie the game at 50-50 with 49 seconds to play. The Thunder regained the lead after Costello stole the ball from Wooster with 31 seconds left. Costello drew a foul and then hit a pair of free-throws with 26 seconds to play.
Trine returns to action Wednesday hosting Adrian at 7:30 p.m.
NEW CONCORD, Ohio - Muskingum scored the game’s first point and never trailed handing Trine a 54-47 loss Wednesday in NCAA Division III women’s basketball.
Kristen Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Kelly Costello (Muncie, Ind./Delta) added 10 points. Liz Gehrig (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) had eight.
The Thunder shot 38 percent (18-of-48) from the field, 40 percent of its three-point goals (4-of-10) and 46 percent at the free-throw line (7-of-15)
The Lady Thunder drop to 5-6. The Lady Thunder return to action Saturday hosting Wooster at Hershey Hall at 3 p.m.
Four Lady Thunder players scored in double-digits, but it wasn’t enough as Trine fell to Monmouth 68-63 Saturday in women’s basketball.
Kristen Julian (Angola, Ind.,/Angola) scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis.,/Pecatonica) added 15 points and six rebounds. Liz Gehrig (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) and had Kelly Costello (Muncie, Ind./Delta) 10 points.
The Lady Thunder shot 47 percent from the field (24-of-56), nearly 71 percent at the line (12-of-17) and 23 percent of three-point attempts (3-of-13). They also committed 15 turnovers, while recording seven steals and five blocked shots.
Trine is back in action December 30 at Muskingum.
Trine welcomes Monmouth (3-4) to Hershey Hall for one last women's basketball game before the Holiday break. The Thunder are fresh off an impressive win over Albion. Monmouth has lost three straight.
Trine is paced by sophomore Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wisc./Pecatonica) who averages 13.2 points and 5.8 rebounds a contest. Senior Kristen Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) adds 10.6 ppg and 6.2 rpg. Junior Liz Gehrig (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) has scored 10.7 ppg. and 2.2 rpg.

Trine dropped to 4-4 Friday night suffering a 59-36 loss to top ranked Hope in MIAA Women’s basketball.
Hope, now 6-0, remains the number one team in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches Poll. The Dutch are also ranked third in the d3hoops.com vote.
Hope took control scoring the first basket and built a 12 point lead just seven minutes into the game. The visitors expanded the margin to 25 points outscoring Trine 37-12 in the first half.
The Dutch led by as much as 28 points midway through the second half, while Trine cut the lead to 19 points once.
Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wisc./Pecantonica) paced the Lady Thunder with eight points, Kristen Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) scored six.
Trine returns to action Saturday afternoon at Albion. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
The Lady Thunder face their toughest test of the season tonight as they welcome top-ranked Hope to Hershey Hall in MIAA women’s basketball. Tonights game comes after two days of weather issues postponed the game, which was originally set for Wednesday.
The Dutch are 5-0 and are No. 1 in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches Poll, and third in the D3hoops.com vote.
Hope is a very prolific team averaging more than 83 points a game, while giving up 54 a contest. They are led by Carrie Snickkers with 13.4 points and 8.2 rebounds a game. She has also blocked 20 shots and tallied 11 steals through five games. Teammate Erika Bruinsma is averaging 9.4 ppg. and 4.0 rpg. Philana Green adds 9.0 ppg. and 5.8 rpg. Five other players are averaging five or more points a game.
While Hope is soaring, Trine (4-3) is struggling.The Lady Thunder are riding a two-game losing streak and have two starters out of the lineup.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Trine lost its second straight Saturday, this time a 60-50 decision to Saint Mary’s in the MIAA season opener for both teams.
The Lady Thunder held their ground until midway through the second half before the Belles ignited a 14-4 run over six minutes to build a 56-44 lead late.
Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wisc./Pecatonica) scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Lady Thunder. Kristen Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) added nine points and nine rebounds. Jennifer Wall (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) scored eight points.
Trine shot 30 percent in the first half (6-of-20) and 24.1 percent (7-of-29) in the second half to finish with just 26.5 percent for the contest. The Lady Thunder hit 23-of-28 free throws, and connected on just one-of-ten three point attempts.
FORT WAYNE - One-time rivals met up Tuesday night as Indiana Tech thumped Trine 68-50 in women’s college basketball.
Things got started rough for Trine (4-2) hitting just 30 percent (6-of-20) - while Indiana Tech shot nearly 44 percent (14-of-32) to build a 34-19 first half lead.
The Warriors (2-4) were held without a field goal in more than seven minutes of the second half as the Lady Thunder (4-2) trimmed the lead to just six points at 35-29 with 14:12 to play but could pull no closer. Tech responded with their own run, a 10-0 rally over the next 2:18 to build a cushion and control of the game.
Trine shot 47.8 percent in the second half (11-of-23) and 39.5 percent overall. Tech got hotter hitting 46.9 percent (15-of-32) for 45.3 percent overall.
Haley Killingbeck (Poneto, Ind./Southern Wells) scored nine points to lead Trine.

The last time out, a clutch-shooting Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wisc./Pecatonica) carried the Lady Thunder with 18-of-21 free throw shooting to power a 60-56 win at Hershey Hall. Senf finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Senf also scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds in Saturday's 57-47 victory over Anderson.
In that contest, Angola High School product Kristen Julian poured in 21 points to lead the Lady Thunder.The Warriors (1-4) have lost two straight. Trine (4-1) won a pair of games since suffering its only loss November 21 to Franklin in the Earlham College Classic.

Trailing by 28-16 with 2:28 to play in the first half, the Lady Thunder went on an 18-4 run over the next 14 minutes to regain the lead and control of the game. Trine is back in action Tuesday at Indiana Tech.
When Trine’s shooting game faltered, Danielle Senf’s (Blanchardville, Wisc./Pecatonica) free-throw shooting didn’t. The sophomore hit 18-of-21 free-throws, including 13-of-14 in the second half to power the Lady Thunder to a 60-56 win over Indiana Tech Tuesday.
The Lady Thunder struggled from the field throughout, finishing with 29 percent field goal shooting (14-of-48), but we able to keep the visiting Warriors at bay with 31-of-40 at the free-throw line. Senf finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds for Trine. Kristen Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) scored 10 points and had nine rebounds. Jen Wall (New Haven, Ind./New Haven) also scored 10 for the Lady Thunder.
Trine is back in action Saturday hosting Anderson in 3 p.m. contest.
RICHMOND - Trine dropped to 2-1 on the season with a 74-69 decision Saturday in the Earlham College Classic. The Lady Thunder trailed by as many as 15 points and tied the contest twice midway in the second half but couldn't’t pull off the comeback.
A Kristen Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) lay up cut it to 68-65 with 1:58 remaining, but Franklin finished it off with a 6-0 run over the next 1:24.
Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wisc./Pecatonica) recorded 18 points and grabbed five rebounds. Liz Gerhig (Marshall, Mich./Marshall) scored 13 for the Thunder.

Earlham Classic. The Lady Thunder built a 8-2 lead and never looked
back as they notched their second win of the season. Trine will face Franklin this
afternoon.
GRANVILLE, Ohio - Kristin Julian (Angola, Ind./Angola) and Sarah Howe
(Monroe, Mich./Monroe) ushered in their senior seasons in high-style combining for
48 points in a 80-64 victory over Denison Sunday in women’s
basketball.
Julian was 11-of-14 from the field with eight rebounds and four assists. Howe shot
9-of-14 with five rebounds.
Trine had a hot hand shooting 59.7 percent for the first half, 50 percent in the second
half. Trine also connected on 9-of-12 free-throws in the victory.
The Lady Thunder (1-0) took the lead for good mid-way through the first half and built a
17 point
lead late in the game.

ROYAL OAK, Mich.- Back-to-back conference champion Hope was voted the pre-season favorite in the annual MIAA women’s poll.
Trine was picked fifth after finishing 12-13 overall, 9-7 in the MIAA in 2008-09. Incidentally, 2008-09 was the best record for the Lady Thunder since becoming a NCAA member in 2003. The Lady Thunder returns four starters including Sarah Howe, a two-time all-MIAA first-team player.

Trine University Women’s basketball will host its second annual Young Lady Thunder basketball league Sunday afternoons in September and October.
The league runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. September 13, 20, 27 and then October 11, 18 and 25, and includes a weekly mini-skills clinic with Lady Thunder players and coaches.
Entry in the league costs $45 dollars, additional family members receive a $10 dollar discount per registration. All participants receive a t-shirt, free admission to Lady Thunder home games.
All league games will be played at Hershey Hall on the campus of Trine University in Angola, Indiana.
