2009 News

10.24 - Scots Down Thunder 6-1
ALMA, Mich Courtney Stahl (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) stopped 9 shots. Elizabeth Morgan found the net in the 83rd minute for Trine.  Trine could only muster two shots and two shots on goal.  Alma fired 29 shots, 15 on goal. Trine returns to action Wednesday at Albion.

10.20 - Rehling Stops 13 Calvin Shots
Nickole Rehling (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) stopped 13 shots, but the Thunder dropped a 5-0 loss to Calvin Tuesday in MIAA women's soccer. The Thunder struggled failing to connect with a shot, or a shot on goal while Calvin blasted 35 shots including 21 on goal.

10.16 - Trine, Olivet Rescheduled
Trine University and Olivet College have rescheduled their women's soccer game for Thursday, October 22 beginning at 4 p.m.

10.14 - Trine, Olivet Game Postponed

Today's MIAA women's soccer game between Olivet and Trine has been postponed. No reschedule date has been announced. Check back for more details.

09.23 - Dillich, Newberry Score Two Goals in Bluffton Loss
BLUFFTON, Ohio - Bluffton scored four first-half goals en route to a 7-4 victory over Trine Wednesday in women's college soccer. Tia Dillich (Richmond, Va./Hanover) and Rachelle Newberry (South Haven, Mich./South Haven) each scored a pair of goals for the Thunder.

Trine took 10 shots, Bluffton 26, 13 on goal.Courtney Stahl (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) and Nickole Rehling (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) combined for six saves.

Trine returns to action Sunday against Franklin.

09.16 - Yellow Jackets Down Trine 4-1, Newburry Scores
Defiance found the net three times in the first half to cruise to a 4-1 win Wednesday over
Trine. The Yellow Jackets had 27 shots, while Trine had 13.  Courtney Stahl
(Lowell, Ind./Lowell) had nine saves.  Trine’s lone score came at 47:25 on a
corner kick by Rachelle Newberry (South Haven, Mich./South Haven)

Trine is back in action Sunday on the road facing Muskingum Sunday.

09.09 - Late Rally Dooms ThunderCourtney Stahl
For 64 minutes Wednesday, Courtney Stahl (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) withstood everything
in her way. The Freshman goalkeeper stood strong as Goshen fired off 20 shots, on
the 21st  Goshen found the net.

With just over 26 minutes remaining, Chelsea Graber grabbed an opening on the right
and launched a 15 yard blast past the outstretched Stahl.

The goal gave Goshen a 1-0 lead.  Goshen put the game out of reach in the 79th minute on a goal by  Brianne Mault. Stahl finished with 17 saves. 

Goshen tallied 28 shots on goal, 14 in both halves.The Thunder had four shots.Trine is back in action Sunday afternoon at Hiram.

09.05 - Thunder Fall 5-0 to Foresters
Trine dropped to 0-3 on the season with a 5-0 decision to Huntington. The Foresters fired 21 shots on goal, while the Thunder launched five shots. Freshman Courtney Stahl (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) stopped eighth shots for Trine. Trine is back in action Wednesday hosting Goshen.

In the second game, Grace downed Olivet 2-1.

09.03 - Lancers Blank Trine
Grace scored three goals in the first half and two in the second to post a 5-0 round one
victory in the Jennifer L. Siersma Classic at Trine University. Nickole Rehling netted 14 saves in the loss.Trine is now 0-2 on the season, Grace is 3-0.

In Game two, Huntington edged Olivet 3-1. Huntington and Trine will square off at 11 a.m. Later, Olivet faces Grace at 1 p.m.

09.01 - Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener

Pepper Pike, Ohio - Trine University officially kicked off the Terry Stefankiewicz era in
women’s soccer with a  6-2 loss to Ursuline College Tuesday.

With 18 seconds remaining in the first period, the host Arrows found the net to break open a 3-2 game. Ursuline cruised to the win, scoring two more goals in the final half.

Mary Lang (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) led Trine with a goal and an assist. Christine Dillich (Richmond, Va./Hanover) also chipped with a goal.

The Thunder is back in action hosting the Jennifer Siersma Classic Friday and Saturday. The Thunder battles Grace Friday at 3 p.m. and Huntington Saturday at 11 a.m. Olivet and Huntington play Friday at 5 p.m., while Olivet and Grace meet-up Saturday at 1 p.m.

7.30 - Thunder to play in national soccer event
FORT WAYNE - Trine women’s soccer will get an early start on the 2009 season with
an exhibition game at the National Soccer Festival at Hefner Fields in Fort Wayne.

The Thunder in their first game under new coach Terry Stefankiewicz’s leadership will
face Manchester College in a match-up of NCAA Division III foes, August 27 at 8:30 p.m.

“This is big for our kids,” Stefankiewicz who is the co-founder of the event said. “They’ll be
exposed to the top college programs in the nation.  More importantly, it should give them
some ownership of the event. They are partners in the success of the tournament.

Stefankiewicz launched the event in 2000 as way to showcase top-notch college and high school soccer to Northeast Indiana. It’s grown to be the premiere pre-season soccer events in the country. Nine men’s and women’s teams have kicked off their national championship seasons at the event.

This season Michigan State, Evansville, Indiana, Drake, Oakland, Akron, Ohio State, Louisville, IPFW, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Illinois-Chicago and Central Michigan are among teams scheduled to participate. For more information access www.nationalsoccerfestival.com

10.25 Thunder end regular season

Calvin fired 38 shots in a 7-0 victory over Trine Saturday. The loss drops Trine to 3-15, 0-8 in the MIAA. Nickole Rehling (Ossian/Norwell) grabbed 22 saves in the loss. Saturday’s game marked the end of the regular season. 

10.21 Newberry nets two goals in 2-1 loss K-College
The Thunder snapped their two game scoreless streak with two goals by freshman Rachelle Newberry (South Haven, Mich/South Haven).  In the 20th minute, junior Nicole Muzzillo (Angola/Angola) passed the ball up to Newberry and she shot the ball from 18 yards out, hitting the side netting.  In the 82nd minute Newberry found the net for the her second goal off a corner kick.  Amy Ramiller (Goodrich, Mich/Dowagiac) kicked the ball into the goal box and Newberry tapped it in.  Freshman Nickole Rehling (Ossian/Norwell) contributed with eighteen saves. Trine (3-14, 0-7) returns to action Saturday at noon hosting Calvin.

10.15 Thunder blanked on the road
SOUTH BEND - Trine lost their fifth straight MIAA game Wednesday 4-0 to Saint Mary’s College.  Freshman keeper Nickole Rehling (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) had eight saves for the Thunder on stormy weather conditions. Trine (3-12, 0-5) will begin their final home-stand by hosting Albion on Saturday at noon.  This three game home-stand will lead up to the MIAA tournament November 1.  

10.11 Thunder drop 7-1 decision at OC
OLIVET, Mich.- Freshman Nickole Rehling (Ossian/Norwell) stopped 20 shots, but Trine suffered a 7-1 loss to Olivet Saturday in MIAA play. Trine (3-11, 0-4) scored its only goal of the afternoon in the 83rd minute on a shot by sophomore Nicki Dixon ( Kenton, Ohio/Kenton).  Freshman Sierra Lohr (Elida, Ohio/Elida) assisted on the goal. 

The Comets limited Trine to just three shots, two in the second half.   Kellie O’Dowd and Katie Koralewski led Olivet with two goals. Trine faces St. Mary’s Wednesday in South Bend.

10.07 Thunder suffer road loss at Urbana
URBANA, Ohio - The Trine women dropped an 8-1 decision to Urbana University Tuesday. The Blue Knights scored four goals in the first half and four in the second to cruise to the victory.

The Thunder faced 45 shots on goal while firing two of their own. Megan Zieles gave up five goals and stopped 12 shots. Nickole Rehling stopped seven shots and surrended three goals. Jessica Walker scored Trine's only goal, assisted by Sierra Lohr, in the 74th minute. The Thunder (3-10) resume MIAA play Saturday at Olivet.

10.04 Rehling stops 15 shots against Alma
Nickole Rehling (Fr., Ossian/Norwell) stopped 15 shots, but the Thunder couldn’t withstand Alma Saturday in a 6-0 loss to the Scots.  Six players in all scored for the visitors who fired 25 shots at the Thunder. Trine managed just two shots on the day.  Trine is back in action Tuesay at Urbana.

10.01 Hope bests Trine 3-0
HOLLAND, Mich., -The Thunder and Dutch played to a 0-0 first half tie, but Hope (7-4) scored three goals in the second half to pull away. Trine (3-8) faced 36 shots - including 17 in the first half. Trine managed just one shot against the Dutch. Trine hosts Alma Saturday at 12 Noon.

09.27 Trine drops MIAA contest to the Bulldogs
The Trine University women's soccer team dropped 0-1 in the MIAA today with a loss to the Bulldogs of Adrian College, 6-0. Nickole Rehling made an impressive 12 saves to add to her career save total. The Thunder will be back in action on Wednesday as Trine heads to Hope College for a 4pm game start.

09.23 Trine blanks Franklin 2-0
Rachelle Newberry (South Haven, Mich./South Haven HS) scores a pair of goals to lead the Thunder to their second-straight shutout and third win of the season. Thunder goalkeeper Nickole Rehling faced 13 shots and while recording three saves. Trine heads to Adrian Saturday.

09.22 Thunder beat Taylor-FW 3-0
Trine gets goals from Rachelle Newberry, Jessica Walker and Brittany Covault each score as the Thunder grab their second win of the season.

09.18 Trine struggles in 4-0 loss to Grace
Grace shutout Trine 4-0 Thursday in Angola. The Lancers were impressive firing 23 shots, including 15 on goal to power the victory.  The Thunder logged just two shots – just one on goal.  Nickole Rehling made 11 stops in the loss for Trine.  Trine drops to 1-6, Grace improves to 3-3.  Trine is back in action Saturday at Taylor University-Fort Wayne.

09.16 - Thunder down Bluffton 2-0; capture win No. 1
Junior Kara Hershberger (Nappanee/Northwood) netted a pair of first-half goals to power the Thunder past Bluffton 2-0 for their first win of the season, and the first since 2005.

09.10 - Trine drops 2-1 decision to Defiance
Freshman Rachelle Newbury (South Haven, Mich./South Haven HS) scored at 33:53 to give Trine the early lead, but the Yellow Jackets answered with a goal at 38:54 and 58:39 to grab the victory.  Freshman Nickole Rehling (Ossian/Norwell HS) recorded 12 saves for the Thunder. Overall, Trine managed just 6 shots, and 4 shots on goal.  Defiance tallied 20 shots, and 14 shots on goal.  Trine hosts Grace Saturday in a 3 p.m.  Defiance is 1-3-1, Trine is now 0-5.

09.06 - Women’s Soccer Falls to Taylor University
The Trine University women’s soccer team fell 5-0 to visiting Taylor University (Upland, IN) on Saturday. Despite the sixteen fouls on Taylor, the Thunder could not convert, as they were out shot 26-4. Thunder freshmen Nickole Rehling (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) made thirteen saves on the day.

The women’s soccer team plays again this week, as they host Defiance College on Wednesday, with a 4 p.m. scheduled start time.

08.31 - Trine Falls to Manchester, Marian Takes Championship
The Manchester College Spartans defeated the Thunder women’s soccer team this afternoon, 6-0, in day two of the Jennifer L. Siersma Memorial Classic.

Thunder freshman Nickole Rehling (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) continued her hot-streak in the net by making 11 saves on the day.

After two overtime periods the Marian Knights came away with the tournament championship with a shootout victory over the College of Saint Catherine's.

Trine will continue in action next Wednesday at Goshen College. The game time is set for 5 p.m.

08.30 - Women's Soccer Drops Opener to Marion
In the Jennifer L. Siersma Memorial Tournament held this afternoon, the Trine University women’s soccer team fell in a 6-0 decision that went the way of the visiting Marian College Knights.

The Thunder held the Knights for the first ten minutes of the game until the Knights were able to get on the board. The Trine offense struggled to get it going as Marian scored another goal, taking a 2-0 lead into the break. It was more of the same in the second half as the Knights tallied goals late to put the Thunder out of striking distance.

Thunder goalie Nickole Rehling (Ossian, Ind./Norwell) made 17 saves in her Thunder debut, while playing all ninety minutes.

In game one, the College of St. Catherine’s Wildcats defeated the Manchester Spartans, 3-0. The Jennifer L. Siersma Memorial Tournament will conclude tomorrow afternoon. Trine will take on Manchester in the consulation game at 11 a.m. The championship game will feature St. Catherine’s and Marian at 1 p.m.
