2010 Women's Tennis Outlook
The Trine Women’s tennis team looks to add experience and confidence in 2010. A youthful Thunder squad had to grow up quickly in 2009, with the departure of five seniors.
Head Coach Bill Maddock is excited to see growth and improvement this spring. He also expects a more athletic team, lead by junior Jennifer Wall (New Haven, Ind./New Haven). Wall’s leadership will go a long way in grooming underclassmen through the tough MIAA schedule.
Sophomore Melanie Sobeske (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) leads a cast of promising newcomers. Samantha Williman (Anderson, Ind./Frankfort), Kaylynne Goeglein (Fremont, Ind./Fremont) , Elizabeth Steinmaetz (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North) and Kimberly Graffin (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) also begin their first season with Trine.
Returning starters from last year’s team are Arielle Clark of Hillsdale, Michigan, Samantha Kalakay of Owosso, Michigan, and Lauren Davis of Oxford, Michigan.
The team begins its season in sunny Hilton Head Island, South Carolina where it will play schools from all over the country. After returning north the Thunder will host the Thunder Doubles Tournament in the new ARC, Athletic and Recreation Center. This new indoor facility will be used for both practices and matches and it give the team a state of the art facility that will help them compete at the highest level.
“The women’s tennis team has always had a reputation for being the model for a student/athlete because they represent themselves well both on the court and in the classroom,” Maddock said, “I am ready for the season to begin.”
