Trio of music concerts this weekend

ANGOLA, Ind. – Music  lovers will get plenty of options this weekend -- ranging from jazz to ensembles to orchestra -- during three concerts scheduled by Trine University.

The weekend trio of free entertainment begins with the University Jazz Band Concert at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20. The Jazz Combo and Jazz Band, under the direction of Trine instructor Christopher Lizak, doctor of musical arts (D.M.A.), plan an afternoon of music, including "Sidewinder," "Lulu's Back in Town, "You Stepped Out of a Dream" and "What is Hip?" The concert is at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Dale Hughes Auditorium in the Steuben County Community Center, 317 S. Wayne St., Angola.

Later Saturday, the Wind and Percussion ensembles will perform a spring concert featuring a variety of selections. Jordan Childress, a Bloomfield, Ind., senior majoring in psychology, will be the guest conductor for "Land of the Vikings" by Frank Erickson, and professor Stephen Mangold will serve as guest conductor for the performance of "Jurassic Park" by John Williams and arranged by Paul Lavendar. The ensembles spring concert is at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Dale Hughes Auditorium.

The last concert of the weekend will be performed Sunday afternoon by the Chamber Orchestra and Brass Ensemble. The Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Mark Kays, director of the Department of Music, will feature "Erin Isle Sketches" and "Hatikvah – The Hope" both by Elliot Del Borgo and "Pirates of the Caribbean" by Klaus Badelt and arranged by Ted Ricketts.

The Brass Ensemble, directed by Robert Taylor, Ph.D., will perform selections including "Fanfare for the Common Man" by Aaron Copland, "Mancini for Brass Choir" by Henry Mancini and arranged by Larry Meyer and "Stardust" by Hoagy Carmichael and arranged by John Iveson.

The Chamber Orchestra and Brass Ensemble concert is at 3 p.m. Sunday in Dale Hughes Auditorium.

Spring Applied Studies Music Recital at 7 p.m. Friday, April 26, in Fabiani Theatre, located in the Rick L. and Vicki L. James University Center. Admission is free.

Musical Theatre/Opera Ensemble will present Mozart's "The Impresario" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in the Furth Annex, 205 W. Maumee St., Angola. Admission is free.
