Mitch Daniels Leadership team to speak at Boys State at Trine University

Hoosier Boys State attendees at Trine University will be treated to the first Daniels Prize Lecture.

Incoming high school seniors from around Indiana will engage with Tim Solso, last year's Daniels Prize winner, and Earl Phalen, an educator who won the $50,000 grant that accompanies the prize. Former governor of Indiana Mitch Daniels will join the two winners in the hour-long discussion.

The panel discussion is part of the Daniels Prize program sponsored by the Mitch Daniels Leadership Foundation, which was established in 2013 to encourage bold leadership in pursuit of excellence in Indiana. Audience members will be able to pose questions during the public event.

The Mitch Daniels Leadership Foundation will award a $2,500 leadership to an attendee of Hoosier Boys State. The winner, to be selected by the Board of the Foundation, will be announced at the 2014 Hoosier Boys State Convention scheduled July 12 in Indianapolis. Information about the foundation can be found at

Daniels, president of Purdue University, said he is pleased the inaugural lecture will be part of Boys State. "What better place to discuss the importance of bold leadership for Indiana than with a group that is certain to produce leaders in the coming decades," he said.

Daniels was Indiana governor from January 2005 to January 2013, and then became Purdue's president.

Solso was chairman and CEO of Cummins from January 2000through December 2010. He won the inaugural prize in October 2013 and became chairman of General Motors in December 2013.

Phelan is CEO and founder of Summer Advantage USA and Reach Out and Read programs and founder of the Phalen Academy charter school in Indianapolis.

Hoosier Boys State has been organized annually for the past 77 years by the Indiana Department of The American Legion. It brings together more than 500 rising seniors from high schools around the state and will send two to participate in Boys Nation this summer in Washington, D.C.

The event is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 16, in the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics, Inc. Athletic Recreation Center on the Trine campus. Admission is free and open to all.
