Trine University to host Diwali celebration
International students at Trine University will host a celebration of Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, in the Rick L. and Vicki L. James University Center.
Diwali is the annual Hindu festival of lights celebrating the victory of good over evil. It is held in autumn in the northern hemisphere and spring in the southern hemisphere.
The festival at Trine will begin with an Indian Bazaar from 5-5:40 p.m. in the University Center mall and Whitney Commons Café. Different booths will include a poster presentation about Diwali, a traditional Indian doll display, henna stations for herbal hand tattoos, a Bollywood dance station, a flower message station, bangle and cup games, and Indian spices and food. Dinner will be available in the café for $10 for members of the community.
A cultural performance will follow from 5:40-7 p.m. in Fabiani Theater. The performance will include an introduction to Diwali and a prayer song, lamp dance, fashion show, a Bollywood dance and medley, and a quick lesson on how to do the Dandya (traditional folk dance) where the audience is encouraged to participate.
From 7-7:30 p.m., everyone is welcome to join in Dandya dancing in the University Center and end the festivities with sparklers outside on the University Center lawn.
