Trine Drama Club holding auditions for ‘Almost, Maine’

Trine University’s Drama Club will host open auditions beginning at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 and 30 for “Almost, Maine,” billed as “a real romantic comedy.”

Auditions will be held in Wells Theater inside Taylor Hall of Humanities. The play includes multiple parts for men and women, with no experience or preparation required.

“Almost, Maine” will be performed Nov. 9-11 in Wells Theater, with each performance beginning at 7 p.m.

The play takes place in Almost, Maine, “a town that’s so far north, it’s almost not in the United States. And it almost doesn’t exist. Because its residents never got around to getting organized.” On a cold, clear, mid-winter Friday night, the town’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in the strangest ways.

“One of the most charming things about this play is its sense of how quirky romance and love can be, and Maine — speaking from experience — is that place where the quirky is charming and normal,” said Timothy Hopp, Ph.D., faculty advisor to the Drama Club.

“Almost, Maine” was developed at the Cape Cod Theater Project in 2002 and received its world premiere at Portland Stage Company, where it broke box office records and garnered critical acclaim. It opened Off Broadway in the winter of 2005/2006 at the Daryl Roth Theatre and was subsequently published by Dramatists Play Service. To date, it has been produced by more than 2,500 theater companies in the United States, making it one of the most frequently produced plays of the past decade.
