Trine basketball teams closing out regular season on top

The Trine University men’s and women’s basketball teams enter the final weekend of the 2018-19 regular seasons as the top teams in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).

Both squads have secured the top seed in this year’s conference tournaments and both will host their respective semifinal and championship games on the Trine campus at the MTI Center, which opened in January 2018.

The women’s team, ranked fifth in the national poll and seventh in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) poll, have clinched the outright MIAA regular-season title, their third straight outright or shared conference championship. The Thunder go into the final game of the regular season against Kalamazoo (Michigan) College on Saturday (Feb. 16) looking to finish undefeated (16-0) in conference play for the first time since joining the MIAA in 2004. The game against the Hornets is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The men’s team secured at least a share of the MIAA regular-season title this past Wednesday (Feb. 13) with a win against Kalamazoo and aided with a loss by Albion (Michigan) College. The Thunder maintain a one-game lead for first in the conference standings going into the final regular-season matchup against Alma (Michigan) College on Saturday and could seal sole possession of the MIAA title. The game on Saturday against the Scots will also be senior day for Trine, with five seniors set to be honored. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the MTI Center.
