I received my Ph.D. in History from Florida State University in 2021. My research explores the intersections of government, private enterprise, and media in shaping technology and society during the nineteenth century. I am especially interested in the social and cultural promotion of new technologies in the Victorian era, the relationship between governance and infrastructure, and the intersections of masculinity and military life. My current book project examines Francis Brinkley, a British officer, journalist, and educator in Meiji Japan (1868–1912), focusing on his role in mediating knowledge between Japan and the English-speaking world.
I teach courses in British, East Asian, European, American, and Atlantic World history, and I also offer instruction in Japanese language. In addition to my teaching, I serve as faculty advisor for the Japanese Culture Club, where I work with students to explore Japanese history, language, and society beyond the classroom.
Before entering academia, I spent seven years living in Japan, where I studied the language intensively and taught English in a variety of settings. These experiences deepened my interest in global connections and inspired my graduate study. Outside of my academic work, I enjoy gardening, reading, and traveling. My ongoing goals include publishing my dissertation research and continuing to expand my language study.
