Throughout my undergrad experience, I knew physical therapy was my end goal. As a student athlete, my priorities were centered around being successful on and off the court. It was ideal to be able to play volleyball at the collegiate level and earn a higher level of education.

" I was surprised by the quick response to my application and the guidance I received just in the application process. In my past experiences, no other program reached out to me or responded in such a manner. "- Vanessa Owusu

Upon graduating from Roosevelt University, I knew I had some prerequisites to fulfill in order to apply for physical therapy programs. I decided to take a gap year to take the additional courses and work in a physical therapy clinic as a tech, to ensure this was what I wanted to do. Within the first three months of working as a tech, I was sure physical therapy was the career for me. My gap year was extended to a three-year gap, not by choice but due to multiple factors. During the first portion of my time off, I had not realized how competitive it was to get into programs and how many applicants apply to different programs across the United States. I applied to two of the major physical therapy programs in Chicago and did not get in to either. My second year off school, I was discouraged, and fear of getting rejected drove me not to apply to any programs until I could confidently say I was putting my best foot forward as an applicant.

Finally, in my third year off I decided I would do anything it took to get into a program because my desire to become a physical therapist had grown over the years. In August 2017, I was familiar with the application process but thought I’d try something new by looking at the list of programs on the PTCAS website. I came across Trine University and began reading about its DPT program. I became intrigued and submitted my application. I was surprised by the quick response to my application and the guidance I received just in the application process. In my past experiences, no other program reached out to me or responded in such a manner.

I was impressed by the effort of the members of admissions, and the constant line of communication they had with me. From that moment on, I knew the DPT program at Trine would be where I wanted to further my education. I know I made the best decision applying here. The willingness of our professors and administrative staff to go above and beyond our expectations is the most unique component of the program. I am so happy with my decision to apply to Trine University, and I would do again in a heartbeat.
