Trine boasts record numbers on MIAA Academic Honor Roll

July 22, 2016

FREELAND, Mich. -- Trine University boasted a record number of student-athletes named to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Academic Honor Roll, the conference announced Thursday.

There were 132 Thunder student-athletes named to the conference's honor roll. Several student-athletes were recognized on the honor roll with multiple athletic teams. The total eclipses the school's previous record high of 129 set last year. To be recognized on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.50 GPA for the entire 2015-16 academic year and lettered in a MIAA-sponsored sport.

"The achievements of the student-athletes that represent the MIAA continue to overwhelm me," said Penny Allen-Cook, MIAA Commissioner. "I am proud of the work our student-athletes put into being successful in their overall collegiate experience."

Nine Trine student-athletes earned MIAA Academic Honor Roll recognition all four years of their collegiate careers: Kory Shackle (baseball), Jared Holmquist (men's basketball), Levi Lawson (football), Kevin Berry (men's golf), Jaime McCarrell (women's soccer), Sam Gilly (men's track and field), Bridget Marlow (volleyball), Taylor Rabel (volleyball) and Megan Verkamp(volleyball).

The Thunder football team led all University teams with 22 selections to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. Five Trine teams placed 10 or more student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll. Every Thunder team competing in a MIAA-sponsored sport placed at least one student-athlete on the conference honor roll.
