Building on the 22nd anniversary of 9/11, John Shannon, Ph.D., Trine University president, called the
day of the 2001 attacks “a date etched in our collective memory that forever altered
the course of our nation's history.”
“On this day, we remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost and the tragic events
that unfolded,” he said, “and we honor the countless heroes who emerge from the chaos
to demonstrate the unwavering spirit of America.”
Following the singing of the National Anthem by the University Choir and a moment
of silence, Dr. Shannon recalled the events and aftermath of the 2001 attacks and
challenged those in attendance to “reaffirm our commitment to the values that define
us as a nation.”
“Freedom, democracy and the pursuit of justice for all remain at the core of the American
dream,” he said. “We must stand resolute against those who seek to undermine these
ideals, ensuring that the sacrifices made on September 11, 2001, were not in vain.”
“Today, let us not only mourn the loss of innocent lives, but also celebrate the strength
of our nation and the resilience of our people. Let us remember that even in our darkest
hours, we find the courage to shine a light of hope and unity. … Let us honor the
memory of those we lost by reaffirming our commitment to the principles that make
our nation great. Let us stand together united in our diversity and unwavering in
our dedication to preserving the freedoms and values that define our great nation.”
“Let us remember that patriotism is not just about waving flags or singing anthems.
It's also about being a good neighbor, a compassionate friend and a responsible and
caring citizen. … As we honor the memory of 911 victims and heroes. Let us commit
to building a future that reflects the values of unity, tolerance and empathy.”
The Trine University marching band played “God Bless America” to close the program.
