Areeba Kazi, a Trine University biology major from Angola, Indiana, is the winner
of the inaugural Jannen School of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Award for Excellence in
Student Research.
The award was presented at a small reception in the Humanities and Communication (HAC)
Lounge on April 23.
Including a letter of commendation, monetary prize and plaque, the Jannen School of
Arts and Sciences Dean’s Award for Excellence in Student Research recognizes and encourages
excellence in student research.
The award is open to undergraduate students from any major doing any type of research
on Trine’s Angola campus. Research must be completed within the academic year.
“As a teaching-focused institution, sometimes we forget that we have faculty here
conducting research. It’s even easier to overlook that we have students also doing
research,” said Darrin Wilcox, Ph.D., dean of the Jannen School of Arts and Sciences.
“I thought they should be rewarded in some way for their initiative and effort.”
Kazi’s research related to the emergence and impact of artificial intelligence (AI)
on undergraduate research. She conducted the research in conjunction with her father,
Haseeb Kazi, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Mathematics.
Research is evaluated on originality and innovation, research quality, impact and
contribution, clarity and presentation, and ethical considerations.
