Shay Herbert was drawn to Trine because of the welcoming community and thriving women’s basketball program. However, when she first arrived on campus, Shay had yet to decide on a major.

“It was with the guidance of our dean Amy Nicholls and other COM professors I had at the time that made me realize I could find my way with the HAC (Humanities and Communication) department,” she said. “They were so quick to welcome me with open arms and I knew that I could find my place with people like that around me.”

Shay graduated in 2021 with a Bachelor of Arts in communication with a focus in digital media creation.

As a communication student, Shay started gaining valuable field experience by working with Colin Meadowcroft, Trine’s senior producer and creative specialist. She started out by shadowing Meadowcroft and helping with his videos, but as Shay learned more, she began to work on her own projects.

“I was able to learn a lot from him and it opened opportunities for me to work on projects around campus for the HAC department and other organizations,” she said.

Shay is currently the sports information specialist at Trine. In this role, she manages social media accounts for Trine athletics and creates content like photos, videos and website materials.

“Trine helped to prepare me by giving me real-world opportunities and encouraging me to learn outside the classroom through my experiences around campus,” she said.
