Music

Minor

“Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue." – Plato.

Music is found throughout our society in live and recorded music, whether it is in the community park, on the radio, our mobile devices, Spotify, or in your favorite movie or TV series. Nearly every human civilization incorporates music of some kind to pass down as traditions or to elicit an emotional, physical, or mental response.

The Music Program at Trine University enables students from all majors to share their passion of music outside of their career field through various areas of performance and academic settings. Ensemble opportunities offered including brass and woodwind quintets, wind ensemble, pep band, chamber orchestra, university choir, jazz band, jazz combo, marching band, and other chamber ensemble settings based on student interest.  For students who wish to continue refining their musicianship and technique, whether as a beginner or seasoned performer, individual applied lessons are provided and geared towards individual musical interests such traditional classical music, jazz styles, and even hair metal guitar.  Academic music courses at Trine are part of the General Education requirements of all majors and highlight a wide range of historical, cultural, and theoretical perspectives taught by exceptional and experienced music faculty helping students better understand the modern musical landscape.

Students seeking more in-depth musical studies are encouraged to enroll in the music minor degree with experiences in ensemble and applied lessons, beginning conducting, audio recording techniques, and keyboard skills.

Regardless of your level of participation, the Music Program at Trine University provides opportunities to build and refine your critical thinking, time management, leadership, interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills.  These have proven to be beneficial in advancing one’s career outside of music.  In addition, the Music Program hopes to instill a love of music as a lifelong hobby as a performer in a community ensemble of any kind or consumer of music as an audience member, financial contributor, or volunteer in the music industry.
