Summary
The Library Technician plays a key role in supporting library operations by managing circulation and fulfillment services, overseeing interlibrary loan processes, handling acquisitions, and performing copy cataloging. This position also assists students and ensures the smooth operation of library technical services. The Library Technician works under general supervision and exercises independent judgment in carrying out daily activities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Fulfillment Management: Oversee all circulation/fulfillment functions, including checking materials in and out, managing patron accounts, and ensuring adherence to circulation policies. Provide training and support for student workers at the circulation desk.
- Customer Service: Provide friendly, front-facing support at the circulation desk, maintaining a welcoming environment for students, faculty, and visitors. Assist patrons with questions, resources, and library services while fostering a positive user experience.
- Interlibrary Loan (ILL): Manage interlibrary loan requests, including borrowing and lending transactions, to ensure timely access to materials not available in the library’s collection.
- Acquisitions & Budget Support: Support acquisitions by processing purchases and donations, maintaining vendor and acquisition records, completing pre-order activities, reconciling purchases with the Business Office, and processing purchase card statements and related financial documentation.
- Student Assistance: Provide technical and research support to students in the library, ensuring they can access and use library resources effectively.
- Faxing & Printing Services: Assist campus patrons with faxing needs and provide support for standard printing, scanning, and related services at the circulation desk.
- Large-Format Poster Printing: Manage and operate the library’s large-format poster printer, including processing print requests, preparing files for printing, ensuring quality control, maintaining supply levels, and coordinating with students and faculty. This includes handling a high volume of print jobs, often in the hundreds each semester.
- Collection Maintenance Support: Assist librarians with weeding and general collection maintenance to ensure library resources remain current and relevant.
- LibGuide & Instructional Materials Support: Assist librarians in reviewing and updating LibGuides and instructional materials, including PowerPoint presentations and Moodle content, to ensure content accuracy, current information, and functional links.
- Outreach & Engagement: Support the librarian’s in facilitating outreach and engagement events; assist in admissions-related events (e.g., Preview Day, SOAR)
- Professional Service: Participate in at least one PALNI committee, contributing to consortium initiatives, shared expertise, and collaborative projects that support library operations.
- Copy Cataloging: Serve as backup support for librarians in performing copy cataloging of library materials, ensuring accurate classification and metadata entry. Assist with processing physical materials, handling withdrawals, and maintaining cataloging workflows. Collaborate with the Library Director on complex cataloging issues as needed.
- Library Systems Support: Assist with routine troubleshooting and maintenance of the library services platform, discovery tools, and circulation systems; escalate complex issues as needed.
- Data, Reporting & Assessment: Collect and maintain circulation, usage, and service statistics to support internal reporting, assessment, and accreditation needs.
- Student Worker Coordination: Assist with scheduling, training, mentoring, and monitoring student employees to ensure consistent service coverage and policy compliance.
- Policy & Procedures: Assist in developing, updating, and maintaining internal procedures, workflows, and desk documentation to support consistent library operations.
- Facilities, Space & Equipment Support: Coordinate work orders with campus departments, manage repairs and maintenance of library equipment, assist with room reservations and event setup.
- Marketing & Communication: Assist with maintaining library signage, website notices, and basic communications related to services, hours, and policies.
- Annual Inventory: Conduct the library’s annual inventory during the summer to ensure all materials are accounted for and accurately tracked in the catalog.
- Summer Camps Assistance: Support summer programs that utilize the library space, including Montessori students, assisting with printing, laminating, and other library services as needed.
- Exam Proctoring & Accessibility Support: Proctor exams on an as-needed basis in coordination with Accessibility Services, ensuring approved testing accommodations are implemented accurately and confidentially.
- Other Duties: Assist in other areas of library operations as needed or assigned by the Library Director
Education and/or Experience
- Associate degree in Library Technical Assistant (or related field), or a comparable combination of education and/or experience in library operations or technical services.
- Preferred experience with one or more of the following: circulation services, interlibrary loan processing, acquisitions workflows, or copy cataloging.
