A group of nine female students from the United Arab Emirates spent two weeks on the Trine University campus, taking part in the university’s first Summer Leadership Academy for students from that country.
The students, who left July 28, attend United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), the country’s oldest university, serving more than 15,000 students. Eissa Alremeithi, Ph.D., a faculty member in the College of Business and Economics at UAEU, served as the lead chaperone for the trip.
They came to Trine to build their English skills and master teaching and leadership techniques presented by Trine faculty. They also learned about culture in the United States through activities outside of class.
“I enjoyed the diverse activities with students of different nationalities,” said UAEU student Shaima Ali Alketbi. “I received useful information to improve communication and language skills, as well as abundant information on leadership and its impact on the individual and society.”
"Trine University provided great courses about the English language and the multiple skills of leadership,” said UAEU student Reem Alhajri. “It was very helpful for students, especially undergraduates. They also provided a great opportunity to visit locations around the city of Angola.”
University officials were impressed with the students who took part in the program, and hope it expands in future years.
“These young women from the UAE, many of whom had never traveled abroad, were truly impressive … and so much fun!” said David Colbert, executive director of Trine’s Office of International Services. “They took full advantage of each and every opportunity to participate and learn, whether engaging in the classroom at Trine, bowling, playing tennis, paddling kayaks down the Pigeon River or exploring museums in Chicago. We have been very pleased with the launch of the Summer Leadership Academy, and hope that it is the first of many to come in the future.”
“I feel so privileged to have been a part of such a journey for the students, and cannot wait to hear about what life will be like for them when they return home,” said Mari McHenry, director of international community services at Trine.

Rocky Bleier, who overcame war injuries to help lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to four Super Bowl championships, will highlight Trine University's 21st annual Scholarship Gala, which raises money for student scholarships.
Over 150 Trine University students gathered together in Whitney Commons for the 11th annual PB+J-A-Thon on Jan. 16.
Low-income residents or those with disabilities or limited English proficiency can get their taxes prepared and filed electronically at no cost this spring through the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program hosted by Trine University.
